13 | the copyright owner that is granting the License.
14 |
15 | "Legal Entity" shall mean the union of the acting entity and all
16 | other entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common
17 | control with that entity. For the purposes of this definition,
18 | "control" means (i) the power, direct or indirect, to cause the
19 | direction or management of such entity, whether by contract or
20 | otherwise, or (ii) ownership of fifty percent (50%) or more of the
21 | outstanding shares, or (iii) beneficial ownership of such entity.
22 |
23 | "You" (or "Your") shall mean an individual or Legal Entity
24 | exercising permissions granted by this License.
25 |
26 | "Source" form shall mean the preferred form for making modifications,
27 | including but not limited to software source code, documentation
28 | source, and configuration files.
29 |
30 | "Object" form shall mean any form resulting from mechanical
31 | transformation or translation of a Source form, including but
32 | not limited to compiled object code, generated documentation,
33 | and conversions to other media types.
34 |
35 | "Work" shall mean the work of authorship, whether in Source or
36 | Object form, made available under the License, as indicated by a
37 | copyright notice that is included in or attached to the work
38 | (an example is provided in the Appendix below).
39 |
40 | "Derivative Works" shall mean any work, whether in Source or Object
41 | form, that is based on (or derived from) the Work and for which the
42 | editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications
43 | represent, as a whole, an original work of authorship. For the purposes
44 | of this License, Derivative Works shall not include works that remain
45 | separable from, or merely link (or bind by name) to the interfaces of,
46 | the Work and Derivative Works thereof.
47 |
48 | "Contribution" shall mean any work of authorship, including
49 | the original version of the Work and any modifications or additions
50 | to that Work or Derivative Works thereof, that is intentionally
51 | submitted to Licensor for inclusion in the Work by the copyright owner
52 | or by an individual or Legal Entity authorized to submit on behalf of
53 | the copyright owner. For the purposes of this definition, "submitted"
54 | means any form of electronic, verbal, or written communication sent

81 | with the Work to which such Contribution(s) was submitted. If You
82 | institute patent litigation against any entity (including a
83 | cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that the Work
84 | or a Contribution incorporated within the Work constitutes direct
85 | or contributory patent infringement, then any patent licenses
86 | granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate
87 | as of the date such litigation is filed.
88 |
89 | 4. Redistribution. You may reproduce and distribute copies of the

118 | notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
119 | or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
120 | that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed
121 | as modifying the License.
122 |
123 | You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and

1 | # OneBeacon Android SDK
2 |
3 | ## What is this?
4 | An Android library that scans for Bluetooth Low Energy beacons, parses them into known entities, and provides interfaces to them to the application. It can recognize the following beacon formats:
5 | - Eddystone: URL, UID, EID, Telemetry, encrypted TLM
6 | - iBeacon, AltBeacon
7 | - Estimote Nearable
8 | - URIBeacon
9 | - any other generic BLE devices.
10 |
11 | Unlike other SDK's out there, it has the following benefits:
12 | - it's not tied or locked-in to a specific beacon manufacturer or protocol
13 | - supports rotating MAC addresses, for beacons that are identifiable otherwise (iBeacon, Eddystone UID, Nearable...)
14 | - doesn't require any developer account (unless you plan to use the cloud features, ofcourse)
15 | - uses optimized parsing, saving battery life: no memory allocations occur while scanning the same beacons over time, and native Android 5.0 BLE API is used when available.
16 |
17 | For iBeacon devices, there's also the optional **onebeacon-android-cloud** library, which allows attaching generic data to a beacon and synchronizing it to the cloud, namespaced to your own application package. It can be used to make beacons a data input source in your apps without the need of a dedicated web-service.
18 |
19 | ## How do I get started?
20 | Clone this repository and check out the samples. The library is provided as a local Maven repository and the samples are ready to build as they are.
21 |
22 | ## Quick API help
23 | Check the base-service sample and examine the **onebeacon-android** classes in your favorite IDE. There is a JavaDoc archive right next to the library, in case it's not picked up automatically you can attach it yourself.
24 |
25 | ### Interfaces to beacon sub-types
26 | - **Beacon** - base entity, having address, RSSI, samples count, and potential generic data
27 | - **EddystoneTelemetry** / **EddystoneEncryptedTLM** - telemetry info
28 | - **Rangeable** - a beacon that supports ranging and distance estimation
29 | - all Eddystone frame types: ***EddystoneEID*** / ***EddystoneUID*** / ***EddystoneURL***
30 | - **Apple_iBeacon** - a rangeable that contains a UUID, a major ID and a minor ID
31 | - ***Nearable***
32 |
33 | ### Monitors and beacons
34 | A Monitor is responsible for dispatching back beacon events to your caller. You just set the desired callbacks on it, and start it, handling the callbacks, seeing if you already know about that beacon, what has happened to it, and so on.
35 | A wrapper around this is the ***BeaconsMonitor*** utility class, which will provide you with a set of detected beacons, and translate back beacon events to more discrete methods which you can override.
36 | To create and start a ***BeaconsMonitor*** all you have to do is subclass it and instantiate it with the current context. It literally takes a single line of code in your app to make it beacon-aware!
37 |
38 | ### How to do "ranging" and "filtering" like on iOS?
39 | Ranging is simply done by handling the ***onBeaconChangedRange*** event on your BeaconsMonitor subclass. Since it sends out a Rangeable entity, you can check its previous range and the current range to emulate iOS's entering/exiting zones.
40 | Filtering is not relevant under Android, because the native LE scanner will find always find and report all detected BLE packets for iBeacon or other custom beacon types, and it is not so useful to try and filter at that level. Instead, you should just ignore the beacons that you are not interested in, based on either their type or their properties.
41 |
42 | ## Library design
43 | The library consists of:
44 | - a background service that has two roles:
45 | - provider: does background LE scanning, parses data of discovered packets, manages beacons lifecycle;
46 | - client: communicates with the best provider available, and back to the app through the public API
47 | Usually the client and server are in the same process, so the data flows directly from the service back to the application, but IPC is supported if there's more than one app installed, signed with the same key and having the same declared special permission value.
48 | - an optimized packet parsing engine
49 | - implementations of Parcelable beacon types, each exposing its own API through an interface.
50 | - a simple but powerful API that allows easily creating a Beacons Monitor and simply receiving callbacks when they are found or something about them changes (like their computed Range, estimated distance, RSSI, etc)
51 |
52 | ## How much battery does the scanning eat?
53 | The scanning power consumption is optimized natively when running on Android 5.0 or newer, and emulated on older Android versions by pausing the scan. The SDK offers the possibility to change the current scanning mode between:
54 | - low power (background mode)
55 | - balanced
56 | - low latency (useful if app is in foreground and fast beacon input is needed)
57 |
58 | ## How do I use the cloud features?
59 | You will need to create a developer account in our cloud console in order to use this library in your own apps.
60 | Please read the [Getting started wiki page](https://github.com/Codefy/onebeacon-android/wiki/Getting-started)
61 |
62 | ## Compatibility
63 | The library is compatible with Android API 5 or newer. However it will only start the beacon scanning if the Android device supports this feature, which was introduced with Android 4.3, and if the hardware supports it.
64 |
65 | ## Changelog
66 | 1.0.26 (April 15th 2016)
67 | - added support for Eddystone EID and encrypted TLM frames

1 | # OneBeacon Android SDK samples
2 |
3 | ## Setup
4 | Building the samples requires Android SDK and is done through Gradle build system. You can also use Android Studio to **import** the project and compile it using the IDE.
5 | Note that the **OneBeacon** library is referenced in the **build.gradle** file from a local repository, relative to the sample directory. If you plan to create your own app to use the library you should modify your build script accordingly.
6 |
7 | ### Sample 1: base-service
8 | Example of a simple background service that detects beacons. This sample depends on the **onebeacon-android** library, without any need to create or declare an application key in your app manifest. Consists of three components:
9 | - **MonitorService** - a simple Android **Service** that creates a new **MyBeaconsMonitor** when it (re)starts;
10 | - **MainActivity** - binds and starts the **MonitorService**, and also changes the background scanning strategy depending on the activity state:
11 | - onResume: ScanStrategy.LOW_LATENCY;
12 | - onPause: ScanStrategy.BALANCED;
13 | - onDestroy: ScanStrategy.LOW_POWER;
14 | - **MyBeaconsMonitor** - a custom subclass of the SDK's **BeaconsMonitor** utility class. The superclass (provided by the SDK) starts the internal beacon scanning service, manages the beacon events coming from the OneBeacon service, and calls some protected methods which subclasses can override:
15 | - onBeaconAdded (Beacon beacon) - called when a new beacon is detected
16 | - onBeaconChanged***Property*** (Beacon beacon) - called when a beacon changes some property
17 |
18 |
19 | ### Sample 2: live-users-firebase
20 | This simple app demonstrates the use of a basic OneBeacon cloud API feature: mapping of found beacons to unique entities in the current application's namespace. Because the sample requires accessing the OneBeacon cloud functionality it depends on the **onebeacon-android-cloud** library, and declares an appKey in its **AndroidManifest.xml** file.
21 |
22 | The sample also uses Firebase to display a list of realtime users near each beacon around, with their current proximity, and buzz-ing them by tapping on their name. Tapping again stops the buzz.
