I recently was asked to make two cakes with some flowers on. I know my mother-in-law has a tendency to wanting to save these decorations, so this time I went ahead and made a flower spray or bouquet if you wish, so I didn’t have to use buttercream to glue them to the cake.

Since I'm a WP7 hardcore fan and got my phone on the (Swedish) release day (4th in Scandinavia and 1st woman) there was no cases or pouches to buy. So I made my own. It's no secret that I love the design of the UI so I had to go with that. I guess I did something right because my brother wanted one for his phone too.


WP7 Pouch The one on the left is a bit more sturdy and made of vinyl. The black one is two layers of felt. Nice use of the phone's accent colors on the pouch, right? :P

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview was released close to our birthdays this year, which made the whole pick-a-cake-theme process really easy this year.
We are both early adopters and huge Microsoft fans so it just had to be a beta fish (or betta).


Unfortunately the marbling in the blue doesn’t come through in the picture, neither does the two different reds and blues on the fish itself :/




The cake was filled with raspberries, vanilla, whipped cream and Dulce De Leche buttercream and covered with marzipan/sugar paste. The fish was made of sugar paste.

I've recently found an app for my windows phone 7 that I like more and more. It's a fun, quirky app that lists "themed days" like Mother's day, Mardi Gras and Cinnamon roll day.
It supports Live Tile so I don't have to miss out on such a day ever again.
It also lists lesser known days like International hug a musician day, Vegan Pizza day and Carrot day.

"Temadagar" is only available in Swedish, at least for now (you could always send him a request :P) and can be found here

 



Today is Cupcake day, and I just happened to have a new recipe for raspberry frosting I wanted to try, imagine that :P
It's probably the best frosting I ever made. Not too sweet and lots of raspberry taste.
The frosted cupcakes is lemon cupcakes and the others are tiger cupcakes (chocolate/vanilla)

Let's not speak about the fancy cake box :P

This year’s birthday cakes was particularly annoying. (Pun intended)

Half the guests hate his guts and half of them just love him.
So we went for it, Orange with his tongue out (I hope you here the annoying sound).
Pear, Marshmallow and a couple of other friends was also invited.

 



The green cake is raspberry, vanilla and whipped cream covered with marzipan and sugarpaste.
The white cake is filled with dulce de leche-mousse and dark chocolate mousse covered with sugerpaste.
Annoying orange and his friends are made from modelingpaste.

I think the cake was a hit because when one of the guests saw the cake he went "wasaaaaaaaaabi" and quoted a lot of videos :P
Of course we had to add the magic pinwheel too.

A couple of months ago I made a WP7-inspired pouch for my phone
I got so good response and so many who wanted one and some who even encouraged me to produce some for sale.
So I did, and now they've finally arrived

What better way to celebrate First Contact Day than to show you a recent cake I made?
Yeah, I know that first contact isn't until 2063 but what kind of geek would I be if I didn't mention it?

A friend of mine is a Borg, no really he is! At least it's his last name.
He also happens to be a Trekker so when his birthday came up he wanted an assimilated princess cake (common cake in Sweden).

So here it is, pale Borg skin, implants and all. And no Borg cake is complete without a "laser" (in this case an LED)

It was a bit hard not to make it with a nice finish, but hey it's a Borg!


For those of you who are into electronics or puns, this one's for you: Resistance is futile

Get it? Futile? No? :P (zero ohm resistor)

The cake is filled with raspberries, vanilla and whipped cream. Covered with sugarpaste/marzipan with a crumb coat of Dulce De Leche buttercream. All the black details (and the resistor) are made of chocolate modelingpaste. I brushed the cake with Vodka for a bit semi-slimy skin, but it doesn't show that well in the picture.

This was my first attempt of making modeling chocolate, but it turned out great. Not to mention how delicious it was. I'll have to try it again sometime.

I love Windows 8 apps, I love the fact that I know instantly where to find the back button and how to get to the settings in (almost) ALL apps. That is a fantastic strength we should all utilize.
One of the things I’ve noticed and get asked quite a lot is that the app bar sometimes is neglected and that some of the rules isn’t that easy to keep track of, and I agree. Most people I’ve talked to don’t even know that there are guidelines for this.

I’m going to try to demystify the app bar with a blog series. I hope you enjoy!

 

 

Here is a short introduction to the app bar.

 

The app bar is found in most windows 8 apps.

The user activates the app bar with a swipe from the top to bottom or bottom to top, or by right clicking anywhere in the app.

See it as a toolbar of sorts. You put all commands NOT related to search, share or settings here (or navigation, we are getting to that later).
Both contextual and global commands should be in the app bar.

I had the honor to get invited to Skelleftehamn by a friend to be a witness at their wedding, and make the cakes for the reception. The ceremony was small but very nice with just 3 witnesses. We had to go by boat (just a small one) to a lighthouse island.

The bride wanted 3 different simple, not tiered cakes. So I did my best. She was very happy and the guests seemed somewhat impressed.

It was a bit scary making someone's wedding cakes, she WILL remember it forever, success or failure. I’m glad my first time was for such a good friend, she would forgive me if I failed Smile
Now I’m ready for the next challenge.

The white cake is filled with strawberries and whipped vanilla/wild strawberry frosting. The pale pink cake is filled with strawberry mousse and meringue mousse. The chocolate cake is an adaptation of Nigella Lawson's chocolate fudge cake. All the flowers are handmade with flower paste (gum paste)

So in short this is what you should think about while designing your app bar.

* Most used buttons to the far sides of the app bar

* Group similar buttons together

* Use menus and flyouts to save space

* Persistent buttons to the right
* If you have more than 3 persistent or more than 1 group, split them up

* Contextual buttons always to the far left side, and never shown before they are usable
* Make the app bar sticky when you show contextual buttons

* Additional (hidden/inactive) buttons should never move persistent buttons, place them to the side of them.

There are of course some exceptions to the rules ;)

“New, “add”, anything that is used to create or add an item should always be placed to the far right. It should always use the + sign, and this is the only buttons allowed to use that.

”Delete” and “Remove” should always be to the left of “new” and “add” (so second to the right edge)  

“Select all” should always be to the far left.

Since the coming update of Windows Phone 7 is called "Mango" everything mango is more desirable to WP7 geeks right now. So I just had to make some mango cupcakes.

My husband and I were talking about different projects we have going on, one of them being an augmented reality app for WP7 he is working on.
Augmented Reality Mango Cupcake It just hit me that we had to make the mango cupcakes augmented reality enabled, so we did :P

I made a basic cupcake with mango bits, cut the top of to allow the print to lay flat and hollowed it out to make room for some mango-lime curd. The marker is printed out with food color on malty sheets so it’s completely edible.

We bought a 3D model of a mango and my husband did the software-part.

ARToolKit Marker Generator allows you to generate personalized markers and the needed .pat file. It was very easy, just hold up the picture to your webcam and take a snapshot. The generator does the rest for you.

The stor(e)y behind this cake: It was a cloudy day when I made the cake. We felt like one instance was enough for our department. Just before serving the cake we put it on the table for storage (get it?). Afterwards we all felt like blobs Winking smile (sorry, I’m married to a pun master and it seams to rub off a bit)

I have been working (internship of sorts) at Microsoft for a couple of months now and when a colleague was leaving for another job, I got asked to make a cake.

Since he was working with Windows Azure, I couldn’t think of a better theme for the cake than the cloud.

 

I like the cloud power logo, so I went for it. It might not come through in the picture but it is 6 nuances of Azure on the cake Smile with tongue out

The cake is filled with raspberries, vanilla, whipped cream and dulce de leche buttercream. All decorations in Marzipan/Sugarpaste.

All navigation should go in the top app bar. It can be shortcuts to parts of the app or even categories of your app.

You get around 200 icons with the developer tools, use them, Microsoft has done that job for you.

If you don’t find the right button for your app you can use one of my favorite apps Metro Studio 2 from Syncfusion. It’s a free app with over 2500 “metro inspired” icons. You can even send in a request for a new icon.
Metro Studio 2 allows you to do some easy editing like change the size, color, background, padding, rotate etc.
Other resources worth mentioning is http://www.ModernUIIcons.com (former templarian I think) They offer 1100 icons in expression design format, svg and xaml.
and http://www.geekchamp.com/icon-explorer/ that has over 1500 icons in png, xaml and html.

There is a Windows 8 app called “xaml icons” that offers over 10000 vector icons. I have yet to try it but 10000 sure is a lot of icons!

Last year me and my husband had the chance to go to the Build conference.
When we realized that it was going to be held in Redmond we both said that we should go, when we found out it was on Microsoft campus it was no longer a choice, we HAD to go Smile

 

This year we decided to go as well, since we both are geeks/nerds (pick one, or both perhaps) we don’t go to Thailand or grand canaria etc, THIS is our kind of vacation, THIS is what we save our vacation money towards.

So what was so great about last years conference?

well, almost everything from sessions to interviews and meeting fellow geeks.
Some of the highlights for me was to see Scott Hanselman live. He is a great presenter. And of course to see Steve Ballmer on stage too.


The sessions I remember most is Tips on self-evaluating the UX f your app, Bleeding edge ASP.NET: See what is next for MVC, Web API, SignalR and more and perhaps Windows Phone 8: Using the speech API speech is cool (and so are bow ties) and under appreciated if you ask me Smile


We still don’t know what the sessions will hold for this year, but I have high hopes.
I especially want to know about Windows 8.1, Windows phone, UX and the Xbox One.

Code.org is the non-profit organization behind the initiative to show that anybody can learn the basics of computer science, and give every student at least one Hour of Code.

One-hour tutorials are available in over 40 languages and is suitable for all ages.
The global movement reaches tens of millions of students in over 180 countries.

It's free to join in, both as a student and as an organizer.
Last time I checked there were 162 748 Hour of Code events planned around the world.

The main event takes place during December 7-13, but anyone can host an Hour of Code anytime and anywhere. They've chosen that date because it coincides with Computer Science Education Week.

You can find the tutorials here. They are clearly marked with suggested age categories, and all have different themes. For the younger students there are for example Star Wars, Minecraft and Frozen to choose from.
There are also a number of partner tutorials ranging from javascript and scratch to python and TouchDevelop.

Don't have devices or internet at your school or usergroup? No problem, they have even thought of that with their series of unplugged computer science material.
The suggested age range is 4-104 years.

I think it's a fantastic initiative, and our usergroup Coding After Work is naturally participating.

Tomorrow build starts and today you could register for it Smile
We arrived a little over an hour after they opened the doors and there were no lines to speak of.
You could even self register with a barcode Smile


We got the badge, a T-shirt and the program and we were on our way.

After that we went to a Swede meet up, we are over 100 Swedes at build which is a lot for such a small country.
We had a nice couple of hours at the Press Club and later headed over to the hackathon briefing.
Me and Jimmy signed up as a team to make a windows phone app.
After that we went to the Xamarin welcome party, if you have followed #bldwin at twitter you know that basically everyone is going Smile with tongue out
We got a cute monkey and and a T-shirt


Now it’s time for some planning, need to decide what sessions to attend!

The bag fits most WP7 but not the largest ones like the HTC HD7, it will however fit a Samsung Omnia 7 just fine, which measures 4.82 x 2.53 x 0.43 (122.4 x 64.2 x 11 mm). So Samsung Focus shouldn’t be a problem (differs 1mm or so)

 

I have tried it myself with Samsung Omnia 7, LG Optimus 7 (LG E900) and HTC Mozart (and an ipod Smile with tongue out)

If you want to opt for the superfast and easy way, cut the template out in cardstock and glue or tape the straight edges to each other and you are done.

For a fancier one that will stick together all through the party and look a bit better follow the instructions below.

1. Using printer paper (or tracing paper) draw and cut a circle. Mine was about 20cm (8inches)
Use a plate or bowl to make it easier to trace if you need.
Draw 2 lines through the middle of the circle.
Cut out 1/4th of the circle.

2. Place the template on cardstock (or other fancy paper) about 1cm (3/8 inch) above the edge.
Trace around the template.

3. Cut or fold down a small triangle (along the edge) in the “allowance”

4. Glue the allowance to the inside of the other edge.

Decorate the hat if you want.

The app bar is made to hold 10 commands in any direction with the recommended padding.
However, with the handheld devices it can get a bit tricky to press the buttons in the middle of the screen (if you hold the device with both hands for example)
So try to narrow it down.
How to do that? well here are a few suggestions.



listall

Start with listing all possible commands for your app (one page at a time)



Groups

Group all similar commands – in this case everything related to the view and filter. You don’t need to use a divider, but you have the option to.


menus 

Use flyouts and menus where appropriate – this example only shows one filter button, but all 3 is shown in the menu. A real space saver.

An important thing to take into considerations is ergonomics. With Windows 8 and 8.1 came a lot of different devices, small 7” tablets, laptops, very large screens etc.
You need to think how people handle their devices, and with tablets you need to think about the orientation of the device as well.


Windows 8 apps is first and foremost made for touch, if you design with that in mind you will automatically get mouse, pen and keyboard to work too.

This picture shows you where the best, better and not so good areas are when it comes to reach. Because we think touch first, we need to imagine the user holding a tablet/slate/surface (whatever you prefer ;) )
Also keep in mind that most people are right handed.
So all important touch areas should be in the white area.

When it comes to text you should avoid those areas and put all important text in the top of the screen, that’s the optimal placement for reading and where your hands won’t be in the way either.

This autumn/winter is certainly the season of hackathons, at least for me.

To kick it of we started with a Halloween hack. It was super fun to organize and attend.

We crammed in 70 people in Skype's office where we usually are 50.

A lot of participants came in impressive Halloween costumes, and we were part of the Windows Phone Week.

Microsoft's Techdays arrange an annual competition for geek of the year. Last year my husband came in third.
This year I thought he ought to win (really he is crazy geeky) so I nominated him. For those of you who can read Swedish, the nomination can be found here on my husbands blog.

Apparently the judges liked my nomination so much that they also gave ME the chance to come to Techdays. That is so awesome and so considerate of them.
Everyone we've been in contact with surrounding Geek Awards has treated us with the upmost respect and kindness.

Some of the judges even came up to us and said that he really deserved the award. Some wanted to meet this wife of his who nominated him :p

Even though the shuttles started to go much later than the other days people were clearly tired (read hung over) the attendance of the first two session was sparse to say the least Smile with tongue out

If there is only one “design” talk you are going to see, make it this one.
He goes through what not to do, exactly what to think about when it comes to design, description of your app, splash screens, why and what to think about when you reflow your content to different sized screens.

6 months ago or so I got tired of being overweight and got really motivated. I started to work out like crazy with about 9 classes per week and powerwalks almost everyday.

After a while a friend steered me into a diet plan that I followed. It was basically max 50g carbs, max 1500 calories and minimum 2g/kg protein per day (so about 170g).
I did loose a total of 13 kg (29 lbs)
After a while I realized that I was all over the place and had no clear focus and needed help.

So I got a PT, Long story short - it did NOT pan out. I lost 0.5kg (1 lbs), got bloated and basically should eat cod 50 times/week.

I was on the Get up and CODE podcast in December to plan my food and workout regime.


We got delayed due to a blockage in my cervical vertebrae that induced constant migraine for weeks and weeks. My chiropractor has fixed that now so it’s time to start. Open-mouthed smile

Back in April 2014 I met up with a couple of dev-friends over dinner and brainstormed ideas. Not only did we have good food, we also decided to do a Swedish, low-cost, .NET conference.

And so the planning began, we are 5 people on the board and we have another 7 members on our Swetugg Events committee.

It was super fun and a lot of work to put together a conference. None of us had done it before. Luckily two of the board members have awesome employers so they could take time to work on Swetugg during work hours and Jimmy and I do a lot of other events so we are used to planning stuff like this.

The hardest part about the conference was probably the schedule (besides finding a suitable venue). How do we decide if the speaker get a large or small room? How do we decide what topics to book? We were 3 people working on picking the talks and we are interested in different things so I think it worked out fine.

We got a lot of positive feedback during the event (and after) so based on that, I would say the event was a success Open-mouthed smile

But I didn’t only co-organize and work during the conference, I also did a talk about design.
My session concentrated on how to think when it comes to colors, typefaces, pictures and why. Also how to do an easy logo and icon for your app without having a designer on the team.

Seriously tired today. Yesterday I was invited to the Build VIP party and after that we went to the hackathon to finish up our app. Unfortunately I only have my hybrid with me (without VS or Blend) so we were working on Jimmy’s computer. But it’s about to collapse or something,  couldn’t start Expression Blend, and Visual Studio couldn’t deploy to the phone no matter how many time we repaired and reinstalled :/

The keynote contained a lot of good stuff like cool new functions in Visual Studio and Azure, they even made a 20 MB SQL server free for mobile services! IMG_3880 (640x427)

An awesome session about design was Beautiful Apps at Any Size in Any Screen with Sarah McDevittwith.

This was an awesome session about scaling your design for windows 8.1. She talked about what controller to use when and where, and how to make your design work over all different device sizes and orientation.

 

In the evening there was an attendee party at pier 48 with loads of food trucks inviting you to try everything from bacon burgers and Thai to Indian food and cupcakes.
There was a lot of games like pool, air hockey and arcade games to be played and they had an entertainer on stage too.
The view at  the pier was fantastic at night, and kept getting better the darker it got

2013 was a great year for me.

In January I got invited to join MEET Sweden (Microsoft Extended Expert Team) A complete honor.

I got the opportunity attend the “Train the Trainer Windows Phone 8” education in Utrecht.

Me and my husband went full on with our code heavy user group Coding After Work.

Coding After Work started to branch out to other cities, starting with Norrkoping.

We got to organize Easter-, Halloween- (as a part of Windows Phone week) and Xmas hackathons, a hackathon in Malmo and a hackathon with Atley Hunter and Michael Crump at Øredev.

Coding After Work also got to be exhibitors at Øredev and DevSum.

Microsoft organize “summer camp” here in Sweden, where they offer free half day seminars to everyone. I got to talk there about Windows 8 UX.
That felt a bit crazy (good crazy) as I started in this community at summer camp myself a few years back. Circle is closed and all that :)

I committed to change my diet and workout schedule, lost 13kg (28 lbs) and I have more to lose so I was on the “get up and code” podcast. You can see more of this soon.

Wow, just wow!

Sooo many sessions and so little time. It is super difficult to choose what session to attend. And you also want to look at the awesome devices and partners that are here.

 

The keynote was great of course, if not for the Surface pro and acer tablet Winking smile


Next I went to Windows Phone Design for developers. It was a great session, Corrina is a good presenter and she went through all the design principles thoroughly.

Windows Store Overview for Windows 8.1: new design, new promotion and monetization opportunities was the next one I went to, if you are curious to how the windows store for windows 8.1 looks you should watch this, he went through everything.

 

I actually ended up skipping the next session and went and looked at all the cool 3D printers and exhibiters. Like last year there was also an area where you could get design help from the UK team (I think)
I went there and got to talk to one of the girls, and it was awesome, they are very competent and have a LOT of ideas.

I love that they are giving people this opportunity.

The last session I went to was Windows Phone: building great UI in XAML

It was a great “follow up” for Corrina’s session, he showed an app that was, let’s say not so great and told us some tips and tricks for making it better looking Smile

Now it’s time to go stand in the huge line for picking up our Surface pros and Acer Iconias. People were skipping the last session so I’m guessing it will be a while Smile with tongue out
 

Update: The pick up went super smooth, it was SO well planned out, we had hundreds of people in front of us in line but it took like 20-30 minutes until we the got the stuff in our hands Smile

In Azure portal click ”on marketplace”, there you can find a huge amount of apps and services. One of them is WordPress, so let’s search for that.

There are a few WordPress options, click the one that is just called “WordPress” to read more about it and then click ”Create”.

Pick a name for your blog, this needs to be unique since it’s a part of the URL.
Click ”Database”

I’m using ”Mercery” here, since it is free and I have no use for anything larger at the moment.
You can also change the location to one that is closer to you. I’m using West Europe.

Click ”create” and azure will set things up.

This is what it looks like when it’s done. Click on the URL to your blog to start WordPress.

You need to choose language, pick a username and password and such, and then you just click ”install WordPress”.
After a few minutes you will have to sign in to WordPress with the credentials you just created.

And that is it! This is the WordPress dashboard where you can find themes, templates, settings and stuff. You can tweak your blog to fit your personality.

It’s recommended that you put all buttons to the left and right so you can easily reach them no matter what device you are on.
There are some guidelines to this.

 

placing

Put the most used commands to the very far left and right, against the edge where they will be easy to reach.

 


consistant

Persistent commands, the buttons that will show no matter what you have clicked on in the app, should be to the right side of the app bar.
Balance your app bar for ergonomics, so if you have more than 3 commands, or more than 1 group, you should put half of it to the left for easy reach.

 

 

Inactive and contextual buttons should not be shown until they are usable. 
Never “gray out” a button in the app bar.
When you are about to show a previously hidden button don’t move the persistent buttons. Leave them as they are and put the new button to the side of them instead, this so the user still knows where to easily find the persistent buttons.

If you on the other hand have a contextual command you want to show, you should always put them to the far left. (pin/unpin in this case)
This is to show the users what new functions they can utilize, and because it’s highly probable that they will use these commands, and we want to give them easy access.

You should also make the app bar sticky when you show contextual commands, imagine having a photo manipulation app where you mark something in the picture and then you need to open the app bar for everything you want to manipulate, not practical.
Don’t forget to un-stick the app bar when you are no longer showing the contextual buttons though.

Monday the 20th of January I started the workout plan, and the diet plan on Wednesday.
I have had a lot to do during the first week, making it hard to find time to workout and prepare the food and all that.
Excuses excuses I know.
What it actually comes down to is lack of preparation.
I really need to plan better and most of all prepare the food for when I’m in a hurry etc. Otherwise I’m just going to eat out or not at all and get crazy hungry and eat too much or bad later.

So for week 2 I have prepared breakfast muesli for the whole week, I already got all the ingredients for all the lunches and dinners and I am going to prepare more than one dinner at a time so I always have one waiting for me if time is an issue.

I also need to dig out the elliptical walker, it is too cold, dark and Icy out to go out walk longer periods.

So here are the results, not pretty, but we know why and can therefore change it Smile

Had some weight loss 2.4 kg (5.2 lbs) since last week, 2 kg (4.4 lbs) since the start.
I found an awesome low calorie, soy based chocolate dessert. It’s only 104 calories/100gram. Good way to keep the chocolate cravings in check.

I eat too little. I’ve come to realize that I don’t eat the snacks if I’m in a hurry or pressed for time, especially if I have to cook it.
It has shown in my workouts and C25K, I even had to stop at one time because I was feeling too sick to my stomach.
My step count is WAY down, it’s been super slippery out :/
