All PSP models ever released can now run custom firmware, and therefore, homebrew games. There are countless guides and YouTube videos available with detailed explanation on how to install custom firmwares, in case you do not have one on your device already. 4 | 5 | ## Basics 6 | 7 | Extract the archives with [7-Zip](https://www.7-zip.org/) and place them in your Memory Stick under `PSP\GAME` (unless the readme states otherwise). 8 | 9 | ## Will they work? 10 | 11 | Homebrew games are wonderful for many reasons - individuals are willing to put in hours of work on their creation - allowing us to enjoy them - while expecting no compensation at all. 12 | 13 | One thing they don't shine for, however, is quality control. Most of them were last updated a decade ago, if not more. The passage of time may have made them unplayable on modern firmware. While efforts are made to test games and apps before they are uploaded, expect that at least some will not work properly. 14 | 15 | Where the source code is still available, attempts can be made to get the games to work again. If the source code is lost, or was never published, there is little to be done. 16 | 17 | Some apps will not work because they depend on a service that is no longer active (e.g. a client for the now defunct MSN Messenger service). In this case the app is not considered broken - it has served its purpose, and will be retained in the Library for its historic value. 18 | 19 | ### LEDA - Legacy Software Loader 20 | 21 | [leda](https://github.com/PSP-Archive/leda/releases/tag/old) is a plugin designed to provide compatibility with legacy software. Copy `leda.prx` to the SEPLUGINS folder of your memory stick, and enable it inside the GAME.TXT and VSH.txt files: open them with a text editor and type `ms0:/seplugins/leda.prx 1` to enable the plugin. 22 | 23 | This plugin only works with the LME custom firmware. It will not work on the Pro custom firmware. 24 | 25 | ### eLoader 26 | 27 | [eLoader](https://archive.org/details/eLoader.7z) is an application to launch older homebrew games and apps on modern firmwares. Because the eLoader itself has not been updated in a while, it might also fail. It is nevertheless useful as a last resort. 28 | 29 | ### PSP-1000 (or 'PHAT' models) 30 | 31 | The PSP-1000 (the first one to be released) is the only PSP model to have only 32Mb of memory. Some homebrew developers choose to not support this version for their release, to take full advantage of the extra memory available in later models. Such released are tagged with 'PSP-2000+ only' within the PSP Homebrew Library. 32 | 33 | ### PlayStation Vita 34 | 35 | Most homebrews created for PSP should be able to run on a PS Vita through the Adrenaline app. Some homebrews (emulators especially) make use of the Media Engine chip, which is not found on the PS Vita. In this case, the homebrew will not be able to work. 36 | 37 | ### PPSSPP emulation 38 | 39 | Ticking the Software Rendering box in the Graphics settings of PPSSPP may get rid of glitches in some games. It will also decrease performance, however. 40 | 41 | ![PPSSPP settings](help-img/ppsspp-swr-opt.PNG) 42 | 43 | ## Reporting non-working Homebrews 44 | 45 | To report a broken homebrew, create a new entry in our [Issues page](https://github.com/PSP-Archive/docs/issues). Make sure to specify the PSP model and the firmware version that you are using. 46 | 47 | ## A note on Authorship 48 | 49 | The 'creator' field on the Internet Archive pages reflects the credits listed either within the archived homebrew itself, or the readme file provided with a given build. We make no claims on their accuracy, nor do we seek to establish an absolute truth on the authorship of a project. We have no means to adjudicate authorship disputes. The 'creator' field is merely a convenient way of cataloguing projects as they are preserved. 50 | 51 | If the game/application is a port, the 'creator' field reflects the author of the port, not of the original work. This is because the same work may have been ported [numerous times](https://archive.org/details/psp-homebrew-library?query=supertux&sin=) by different developers. 52 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /homebrew-lib/testing-guidelines.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Guidelines for Testers : 2 | 3 | After downloading the homebrew using the archive.org link, verify if the homebrew works on your system or not and report it with a comment in the homebrew's PSP Compatibility section. 4 | 5 | Your report should include your PSP model, full firmware information(not just the version) and if the homebrew works as intended or not. 6 | 7 | # Guidelines for Sorters: 8 | 9 | For the sorting to go as quickly as smoothly as possible please follow these guidelines, 10 | Below you will find information about the actions that should be taken when sorting homebrew and uploading them to archive.org. 11 | 12 | ALL HOMEBREW SHOULD BE REPACKED in the 7z Format before being uploaded to archive.org 13 | 14 | Homebrew games, apps and emulators will be stored on the Internet Archive for future preservation. 15 | 16 | To add new homebrews to the PSP collection: 17 | 1. Set up an account on archive.org, if you don't have one already; 18 | 1. Through the online uploader, drag the homebrew files onto the page. Make sure to add a screenshot of the homebrew as a separate file (outside the main folder) so that it will be shown as a cover for the item. You can most easily take the screenshot through PPSSPP, or any other emulator. 19 | 1. Enter the metadata in the interface as follows: 20 | 1. Page Title: the name of the game or application; 21 | 1. Page URL: you can leave the default one; 22 | 1. Description: a short description of the item's content (e.g. "Homebrew puzzle game for the PlayStation Portable"). 23 | 1. Subject Tags: always add "playstation portable, homebrew" (without quote marks), plus any optional tags you feel might be relevant; 24 | 1. Creator: if not mentioned in a readme file in the package, try to locate it within the game/app itself. If there are many authors, credit goes to the team as a whole, or the lead creator (e.g. HomebrewDude et al). Only if there is no mention of the creators at all, fill this field with "Unknown". 25 | 1. Date: only add it if the original release date (at least the year) is known with any accuracy, otherwise leave blank. 26 | 1. Collection: "psp-homebrew-library" (for authorized users); otherwise "Community Software" with the tags included so it will be later categorized in PlayStation Portable Library: Homebrews 27 | 1. Language: optional; as 90% of homebrew apps are released in English, it might make sense to fill this field only if the app is in a different language. 28 | 1. License: whichever license is mentioned in the app's readme file. If none is mentioned, default to Public Domain 29 | 1. More Options: 30 | 1. version: the version number of the release (only if mentioned, do not add if you have to guess it). 31 | 1. category: one of 'Game', 'App', 'Emulator'. 32 | 33 | # Notes 34 | 35 | - Magnet links for Torrents containing the homebrews recovered so far: 36 | 37 | ```magnet:?xt=urn:btih:dfab696684bc32e76bcfddc300c0ab75a9af280b&dn=PSP%20Homebrew%20Archival%20Project&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.opentrackr.org%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fwambo.club%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.dutchtracking.com%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftc.animereactor.ru%3a8082%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.justseed.it%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.leechers-paradise.org%3a6969%2fannounce``` 38 | 39 | ```magnet:?xt=urn:btih:c6e237f787a3ca5b87ae5b98e436e2a5e89917f3&dn=MobyWare&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.opentrackr.org%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.internetwarriors.net%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.cyberia.is%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fexodus.desync.com%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fexplodie.org%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2f3rt.tace.ru%3a60889%2fannounce&tr=http%3a%2f%2f5rt.tace.ru%3a60889%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fopentracker.i2p.rocks%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2f47.ip-51-68-199.eu%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker2.itzmx.com%3a6961%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.tiny-vps.com%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fopen.stealth.si%3a80%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fwww.torrent.eu.org%3a451%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.torrent.eu.org%3a451%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.ds.is%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fretracker.lanta-net.ru%3a2710%2fannounce&tr=http%3a%2f%2ftracker4.itzmx.com%3a2710%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.moeking.me%3a6969%2fannounce``` 40 | 41 | ```magnet:?xt=urn:btih:741788b659badd94f4ecca59dcabf12b150d077f&dn=psp.scenebeta.com&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.opentrackr.org%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.internetwarriors.net%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.cyberia.is%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fexodus.desync.com%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fexplodie.org%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2f3rt.tace.ru%3a60889%2fannounce&tr=http%3a%2f%2f5rt.tace.ru%3a60889%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fopentracker.i2p.rocks%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2f47.ip-51-68-199.eu%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker2.itzmx.com%3a6961%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.tiny-vps.com%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fopen.stealth.si%3a80%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fwww.torrent.eu.org%3a451%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.torrent.eu.org%3a451%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.ds.is%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fretracker.lanta-net.ru%3a2710%2fannounce&tr=http%3a%2f%2ftracker4.itzmx.com%3a2710%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.moeking.me%3a6969%2fannounce``` 42 | 43 | ```magnet:?xt=urn:btih:8335329b9aa702202e6adba3b314a4c99f2ad0c0&dn=files&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3a80%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.opentrackr.org%3a1337%2fannounce``` 44 | 45 | Inside those files there will be a lot a trash data or duplicates, here are what you will need to MARK AS TRASH: 46 | 47 | 1. Wallpapers, some people uploaded wallpapers as a zip, these should be deleted 49 | 3. Duplicates, if you found the EXACT SAME VERSION of a piece of homebrew,DO NOT MARK AS TRASH DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE SAME HOMEBREW, use your judgement and mark duplicates that are in the worst condition, for example if one is missing a readme and the other is not. 50 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /homebrew-lib/uploading-guidelines.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Guidelines for uploaders 2 | 3 | Uploaders must be admins of the [PSP Homebrew Library](https://archive.org/details/psp-homebrew-library), otherwise it will not be possible to add their uploads to the collection (not even by the admins of the collection). 4 | 5 | For your first few uploads, add your findings to the Open Data collection of the Internet Archive. This does not require you to be an admin of the PSP Homebrew Library, and you will be able to move the files into the collection once you are given the role. 6 | 7 | ## 'Not working' is relative 8 | 9 | Nearly all apps and games that were published by major homebrew sites in the past do work on at least one firmware. And if developers decide to create updated custom firmwares, new apps might suddenly become 'working' or 'not working' as well. The definition depends entirely on the system's software. 10 | 11 | To test, I decided to use neur0n's [LME custom firmware, version 6.61 - 2.3](https://archive.org/details/release_660lme.7z). This is because it supports Dark_Alex's Legacy Software Loader (aka [leda.prx](https://github.com/PSP-Archive/leda/releases)) - drastically boosting the number of apps that it can launch. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Pro or ARK at the moment. 12 | 13 | ## No flashers - ever 14 | 15 | This is the cardinal rule. So many homebrews were created to add/remove assets from the system's NAND flash memory - to modify themes, add quality-of-life improvements or even simply to 'remove useless files'. 16 | 17 | Those are not welcome. In fact, if you don't want to say goodbye to your device, you'd better not test them at all. 18 | 19 | The better flashers included checks for firmware versions and battery levels, but so many of them did not. Whatever they accomplished is largely irrelevant nowadays, and preserving them isn't worth the risk of causing someone's PSP to turn into a paperweight. 20 | 21 | The handful of exceptions include apps that are actively used by most PSP users without issues - such as the latest versions of the Pro and LME custom firmwares. But that's about it. Everything else is to be deleted on sight. 22 | 23 | ## File structure 24 | 25 | All homebrews must be compressed using the 7z format before uploading them. 26 | 27 | The EBOOT file and its immediate contents must be placed at the root of the archive (as opposed to a subfolder). 28 | 29 | Add the usual memory stick structure to the archive *only if the homebrew requires it*. Example of this: the EBOOT that goes into the PSP/GAME folder, but to work it requires additional files at the root of the memory stick. [Monkey64](https://archive.org/details/monkey-64-0311.7z) shows how to deal with similar cases. 30 | 31 | ## Cover image 32 | 33 | Any image uploaded in the root folder will be the cover image. Prefer in-game screenshots to artwork, menus or icons, as they provide a better impression of what the game looks like. 34 | 35 | For emulators, the better choice is to include a screenshot of the menu. Showing an emulated game would be less representative of the application in this case. 36 | 37 | ## Metadata structure 38 | 39 | 1. **Page Title**: 40 | 1. Only include the name of the homebrew. Version numbers belong in their own field (see below). 41 | 1. **Subject Tags**: 42 | 1. Pick one among 'game', 'application', 'emulator', 'demo'. Additional tags can be added where deeded relevant by the uploader (e.g. for genres, like 'shooter', 'visual novel', etc). 43 | 1. If a game participated in a competition (e.g. the NEO 2008 competition), add the relevant tag. 44 | 1. **Support tags**: 45 | 1. '1.50 FW only': if the game works on firmware 1.50, but not on any other version (even by using eLoader). 46 | 1. 'PSP-2000+ only': if the game won't work on a PSP-1000 model. 47 | 1. 'eLoader required': if the game won't boot without it. 48 | 1. 'not working': if the game will not work on real hardware (on any firmware), but it is still retained for its historical value. This applies even if it does work on PPSSPP or another emulator. 49 | 1. **Accessory tags**: 50 | 1. 'Go!Cam': game supports or requires the PSP camera. 51 | 1. 'Go!Explore': game supports or requires the GPS module. 52 | 1. 'IrDA': game/app supports or requires an infrared device. 53 | 1. 'Neo Motion Kit': unofficial motion kit accessory used by some homebrews. 54 | 1. **Multiplayer tags**: 55 | 1. 'ad-hoc support': game/emulator supports an ad-hoc multiplayer mode. 56 | 1. **Creator** field: 57 | 1. Where both the real names and nicknames of a creator are known, prefer real names (as those tend to change less often). 58 | 1. If the game/app is a port, enter the name of the creator of the PSP port. This is because the same game might have been ported several times by different people. 59 | 1. If the number of creators is really large (more than 4-5) leave this field blank, and list them in the Description field instead. 60 | 1. **Date**: 61 | 1. When main version of the game/app (i.e., the most recent one included in the item) was released. If the game/app was unreleased before being archived in the Homebrew Library, leave it blank. 62 | 1. All dates should be later than 2005-05-05 (when Nem released his Hello World for PSP). 63 | 1. If the game/app is a port, enter the date when the port was released (so for DoomPSP it's 2006, not 1993). 64 | 1. **Language**: 65 | 1. Only if a language other than English, leave blank otherwise. Only one language can be entered, so also leave it blank if multiple languages are supported. 66 | 1. **License**: 67 | 1. Only add if the game/app does mention a license within its content, and the license is available among the dropdown options - leave blank otherwise. 68 | 1. Additional metadata: 69 | 1. **version**: Add a custom field named 'version' whenever a version number is available. This will make it easier to keep the most recent version as the main one. 70 | - If multiple versions are available: add older versions in an "Old Versions" folder within the main item (as separate 7z files). 71 | 1. **support-author**: a link to the PayPal, Patreon, Twitch or other payment page connected to the author of the homebrew. 72 | 73 | ## Preview videos 74 | 75 | Inclusion is completely arbitrary - adding them for every homebrew would require too much time. 76 | 77 | Specifications: 78 | 79 | - Must be under 1Mb, and about 10 seconds long. 80 | - Audio: 64k AAC, mono 81 | - Video: 600k AVC, PSP resolution (480x272) 82 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /homebrew-lib/jams-competitions.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Homebrew game jams and competitions for PSP 2 | 3 | -
