And the secret behind that lies in one measurement: 6 ¾", aka the width of the oak floorboards in the Modern Wing. That’s right—everything in the building is based around that one tiny measurement. Of course, not everything in the building is 6 ¾", but everything is a multiple of that number. The good news is that the reason for this closing is a renovation of the existing space and reinstallation of the Japanese art collection. One set of works that will be displayed for the first time in the new Weston Wing for Japanese Art are four carved wooden architectural transoms ( ramma panels) that were created by master Buddhist sculptor Takamara Koun for the Japanese pavilion, the Phoenix Hall, at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition here in Chicago. The Phoenix Hall was Japan’s main national pavilion at the fair. Modeled on an 11th-century temple outside Kyoto, it stood out against the beaux-arts buildings that made up the majority of the rest of the fair, the so-called “White City.” After the fair, the Japanese government gave the Phoenix Hall to the city of Chicago. However, two fires in 1945 and 1946 (supposedly acts of arson) destroyed the structures and necessitated their demolition. The only four pieces of the building remaining were the four ramma panels. These were stored—and forgotten—by the city under the bleachers of Soldier Field until they were discovered there in 1973. These icons of Chicago history and Japanese art were then separated: two panels were given to the Art Institute and two to the University of Illinois at Chicago. However, following UIC’s concerns over the condition of their ramma , their two panels were given to the Art Institute in order to better conserve and display them. The museum is currently raising money for the restoration of the four panels so that they can be displayed together for the first time outside of the Japanese pavilion. The moral of the story? You never know what you’re going to find under the bleachers at Soldier Field. —Katie Rahn ", 7 |
2021-03-12T11:43:26-06:00", 8 |
2025-02-15T23:15:49-06:00", 9 |
2025-02-16T02:22:16-06:00" 10 | } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /json/articles/43.json: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | { 2 |
3 |
articles", 4 |
https://api.artic.edu/api/v1/articles/43", 5 |
This Valentine’s Day, Will You Be Mine?", 6 |
This was a popular and serious subject in Victorian times. In a time of highly regulated courtship, sending a valentine allowed a sharing of feelings that could not be expressed in person. Even—gasp—women(!) were allowed to send valentines. The Art Institute’s Department of Prints and Drawings has a collection of over 2,000 valentines from the Victorian period, including fanciful creations of paper lace, fabric scraps, and artificial flowers; inexpensive printed cards with comic subjects; and even three-dimensional collages. In fact, we have one unusual example that features a real, preserved hummingbird (romantic, or just plain creepy?). Our valentine expert, Debra Mancoff, told me that the best-known valentine maker was an American woman, Esther Howland, who opened her own firm in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1849, and hired only women. She was most famous for her extremely popular “May Basket” valentines, of which we own two. They were made of sheets of paper lace, with a large, paper-cut basket in the middle that contained huge, crowded collages of flowers made from paper and fabric. In the 1850s, a besotted young fellow wanted to impress his fiancée, and ordered a very impressive May Basket valentine from Esther for a whopping $10, which translates to approximately $300 today. He most certainly knocked the socks off his gal, but her parents, sadly, were less than impressed: they immediately broke off the engagement because they were appalled by how badly he handled his money. —Sarah Guernsey ", 7 |
2018-09-13T15:09:34-05:00", 8 |
2025-02-15T23:16:17-06:00", 9 |
2025-02-16T02:22:16-06:00" 10 | } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /json/articles/46.json: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | { 2 |
3 |
articles", 4 |
https://api.artic.edu/api/v1/articles/46", 5 |
The Mummy Returns", 6 |
I would like to relate one of the more interesting questions to have come up in the Art Institute’s legal department. Curators can say the darndest things, but this unabridged email from Karen Manchester, an ancient art curator who should have been a word economist, takes the prize: Karen’s email: Hi, Any laws regulating the interstate transportation of dead bodies that we should be aware of? -K Upon ruling out that Karen needed the services of a criminal lawyer, I learned that her question was motivated by plans to transport a mummy to the museum. The mummy (named Wenuhotep, at the time) and its case had been on loan to an out-of-state museum for over fifty years, and now curators were interested in its return for study and display. The Art Institute is not in the business of moving bodies, ancient or otherwise, so Karen’s question required some research. After scouring the books and consulting with colleagues at other museums, we finally determined that there did not appear to be any legal hurdles to transporting the mummy. So, after negotiating an agreement allowing the borrowing museum to create a replica of the mummy and case, the Art Institute finally got its mummy back. The story does not end there, however, as subsequent research has revealed some interesting facts about the mummy, including that she is not the lady we thought she was . . . It had passed through a few hands since the 16th century, and the heirs of the then-owners were unable to sell it in Madrid. It went on view at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris from 1904 to 1905, where it became a favorite of modern artists such as Picasso and . . . Mary Cassatt. Cassatt took it upon herself to find the altarpiece a home. First, she convinced her friends Louisine and Henry Havemeyer to loan Durand-Ruel the money to purchase the painting. Havemeyer then offered the Assumption to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They rejected it. Cassatt went on a campaign, after the Met’s rejection, to interest American museums in the painting. The Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts said no. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, said no. Working her way west, Cassatt was able to interest the Art Institute of Chicago in the painting, though it took the president of the Board of Trustees nineteen months to raise the necessary funds from trustees skeptical of El Greco’s place in history. So the Art Institute now had the Assumption , where it quickly became a signature work. In the early decades of the twentieth century, another “signature work” was developing as Ernest Hemingway was growing up in Oak Park, just across the Chicago city line. His mother, who had a family membership to the Art Institute, frequently took him to the museum specifically to see the Assumption . He would later claim that the painting inspired him to write as boldly as El Greco had painted. —Erin Hogan ", 7 |
2018-09-14T10:49:40-05:00", 8 |
scholarly catalogue for a temporary exhibition. It features new art historical and conservation research, presented in essays and videos, on Ensor’s monumental drawing The Temptation of Saint Anthony , which was the centerpiece of the exhibition Temptation: The Demons of James Ensor . The Belgian artist (1860–1949) spent most of his life in the coastal town of Ostend. He created The Temptation of Saint Anthony in 1887 at a time of great personal distress following the death of his English-born father. The drawing, nearly six feet tall and composed of 51 separate sheets of paper, has been meticulously conserved. This conservation, and Ensor’s working process, are described in detail in the catalogue. Other essays explore the historical context and visual culture that influenced the artist. One brings to light never-before published letters written by Ensor that help us better understand the drawing. The catalogue includes high-resolution imaging that allows readers to zoom in to see the artist’s marks in detail, as well as interactive components that show how Ensor overlapped various sheets. The publication is lavishly illustrated with more than 500 images. Susan M. Canning, Patrick Florizoone, Nancy Ireson, Kimberly J. Nichols, Sabine Taevernier, Herwig Todts, Debora Silverman, and Anna Swinbourne The catalogue is generously funded by the Regenstein Foundation. Selections of cropping, enlargement and scale, and different photographic processes also contribute to remarkable diverse effects, even from the very same negative. VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS We’re looking at Rembrandt’s self-portrait, Etching at a Window from 1648, which is one of the real landmarks in his profound body of self-portraits.

NARRATOR Rembrandt famously portrayed himself in fanciful costumes, with dramatic gestures and expressions. But in this restrained image, he presents himself at work, holding an etching needle in his hand.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS We believe that he would have made this print while looking at himself in a mirror. And we’re not able to see what he’s drawing on that etching plate. There’s an interesting self-referential element in this print wherehe is in the process of creating a print, perhaps much like the one that we’re looking at.

NARRATOR In etching, the artist draws an image onto a metal plate before printing. One of the most fascinating aspects of printmaking is that we can trace the artist’s creative process in the different ‘states,’ or versions, of the image.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS An artist can etch on a copper plate, print that plate, and then decide to change his or her mind and revise the composition.

This is the first state of the print. And in this first state, we see the open window just as a pure light source. And the viewer is left to imagine what may be beyond the space that the artist occupies. In a way, we can think of this use of the blank paper as a metaphor for inspiration. In later states the open window becomes filled in with a landscape.

NARRATOR Modest but intimate, this particular impression of the image is among the most beautiful examples of this print.

NARRATOR: Hello and welcome to Van Dyck, Rembrandt and the Portrait Print.
We begin the tour with this portrait print by Anthony Van Dyck from the early 1630s. Known primarily as a painter of royal subjects, here Van Dyck used etching to create a compelling and radical self-portrait that’s both a touchstone in the history of portraiture and in the history of printmaking. Victoria Sancho Lobis is the Prince Trust Associate Curator in the Department of Prints and Drawings here at the Art Institute and the curator of this exhibition.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: Van Dyck made a revolutionary decision to create this portrait in a completely abbreviated, fragmentary state, to place the image of his face at the very upper register of the etching. And that creates this very dramatic contrast of a highly finished description of the face with this completely unprinted area of the paper below it.

Artists, before Van Dyck might have shown themselves at work, holding an etching needle or holding a paint brush. In this case we see Van Dyck looking over his shoulder. In a moment of distraction he casts a glance over his right shoulder to give a modest bit of attention to someone who may be observing him.

NARRATOR: With works like this one, Van Dyck transformed expectations about what a portrait print could be, and, as you’ll see today, he would influence contemporaries like Rembrandt and generations of artists who followed him. Enjoy your tour.

NARRATOR: A number of Van Dyck’s portrait prints circulated during his lifetime, but when he died at the age of 42, the series as a whole had not yet been published. The first complete edition appeared four years later, in 1645. This image by Jacob Van Neeffs was the title page. It was based on a Van Dyck self-portrait, but the artist took a few liberties, following the publisher’s directives.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: Neeffs recast the image to create a tongue-in-cheek reference to the art of portraiture, as if Van Dyck has been transformed into a Roman emperor whose sculpted bust is placed on a pedestal, quite literally.

NARRATOR: Written on the pedestal is the title page information.

Next to this print you’ll see a drawing that copies the title page. It includes a note about the portrait series in Italian, likely indicating it had wide international distribution.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: There are subsequent editions of this series later in the 17th Century, again in the 18th Century. And the successive editions of these prints really reflect the ongoing widespread appetite for the portraits that Van Dyck made, and for the experience of seeing them and handling them as a collective work of art.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS Isabella Clara Eugenia was the Spanish regent in the Southern Netherlands. She was the daughter of Philip II of Spain, and married her cousin, Archduke Albert. And they ruled together for decades. He died in 1621, and she decided to adopt a nun’s habit. And that’s how we see her here.

NARRATOR The printmaker Paulus Pontius created this print after a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, of the same subject. One of printmaking’s distinct advantages was its ability to clearly convey information a painting could not.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS It’s painting plus more -- painting and poetry, painting and propaganda. So we see a painting surrounded by allegorical symbols with a swag of fabric held up by two putti who hold a crown of oak leaves, above which we see the all-seeing eye of Providence radiating light over the whole ensemble.

NARRATOR A print like this could also be easily reproduced and circulated.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS So that the portrait painting is now converted into an object of political agency promoting this new appearance of Isabella Clara Eugenia as a ruler who has divine inspiration.

NARRATOR: With the framing embellishment, a collector didn’t even need to frame this print– it could just be mounted directly onto a surface, such as a panel or a placard.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: This small format portrait print is a representation of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who is widely known as a courtier in the court of Elizabeth I. He was known as her favorite, and he was the only real suitor she ever considered.

NARRATOR: Hendrick Goltzius, the artist, created this portrait when Dudley was 86. Dudley may have commissioned it himself, or it may commemorate his appointment as Governor General.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: But what’s especially interesting about it, is that it was printed from a gold plate.

NARRATOR: Typical 16th century engravings were printed from copper.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: But Goltzius is known to have made a whole group of portraits using precious metal plates. And by doing this, he effectively created two different works of art simultaneously.

NARRATOR: After prints were pulled from the precious metal plate, it was used as an engraved portrait medallion. Because gold is soft, few impressions could be made. A lettering specialist inscribed Dudley’s name, age and titles to read correctly on the medallion. That’s why they’re reversed in the print.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: In this gallery, we’re able to consider how portrait prints can invite intimacy. And a work of art produced in this small scale really requires the viewer to examine it closely. This is an object that would fit in the palm of one’s hand, much like a cast bronze portrait medallion, or like a painted portrait miniature, all of which are on display nearby.

NARRATOR This is one of the most enduring images in the history of printmaking. Here Albrecht Dürer depicts Erasmus, the prolific 16th century scholar, humanist, and author of nearly 150 books. It is one of Dürer’s largest engravings of any subject and a remarkable size for a portrait print.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS He’s not willing to make an entirely conventional portrait print. So we have text elements incorporated in the form of printed books, and an actual text plaque that stands at the back of the scene.

Dürer has described Erasmus in the act of writing. In some ways, this portrait print is also a celebration of the power of printmaking, and that is not just the printed image, but also the printed word.

The face of Erasmus is not at all in the center of the composition. What appears at the center are the scholar’s hands in the act of writing, and close by we see two letters, and those letters, A D, make up the monogram of the artist, Albrecht Dürer. So, in some way, Dürer has contrived to place himself at the center of the composition.

NARRATOR Dürer’s basic subject matter, however, is entirely conventional. People were curious about how Erasmus looked; his writings had made him famous. In fact, both Dürer and Erasmus became famous largely through the circulation of their printed work.

NARRATOR: This is Jan Cornelis Sylvius, a minister in the Dutch Reform Church. A cousin of Rembrandt’s first wife Saskia, Sylvius baptized Rembrandt’s first two children. But he was best known for his considerable skills as an orator.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: In fact, Rembrandt created this portrait print of Sylvius depicting him in the act of speaking. So, Rembrandt was in some ways confronting the idea of how do you convey speech? Rembrandt has chosen to show him extending his right hand. This is a classic rhetorical gesture that dates back to ancient sculpture. You can see that his hand casts a shadow on what appears to be the portrait’s frame, and his face also casts a shadow just beyond the darkened oval.

NARRATOR: These devices refer to a tradition of funerary sculpture in the Netherlands, which often included sculpted busts of the deceased emerging from the face of a tomb. And this is, indeed, a posthumous portrait, produced six years after Sylvius’s death.

The text around the minister names him, says where he worked, and gives the date of his death. Rembrandt also includes a poem that reads, in part:

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS: “His eloquence taught men to honor Christ and showed them the true way to heaven.”

NARRATOR Nell Gwyn was a favorite mistress of England’s King Charles II and bore him two children. But she grew up in humble circumstances.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS She sold fruit. She eventually became an actress. It was because women were allowed to appear on stage at all in the later part of the 17th century, that Nell gained favor at court.

NARRATOR When King Charles saw her perform, he was immediately smitten and eventually took her as a lover.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS She lived in a time when it was fairly new to have social mobility. And it’s likely for that reason that her biography became so fascinating to so many people. Even today, there’s a Broadway play based on her life.

And unlike a single painted portrait that might have been made for Charles II to remember his favorite mistress when she couldn’t be with him, a portrait print could be printed in multiples and circulated. The idea that someone’s mistress could be the subject for a work of art that would find a mass audience was entirely new.

It’s sort of a version of People magazine, you could imagine. This was a kind of early idea of celebrity.

Her likeness was something that people wanted to possess. And this particular impression was printed on blue paper, which made the object even more appealing as something to touch and to behold.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS By the time we get to the 19th Century, someone like Félix Bracquemond is interested in demonstrating what etching could do that could not be done, for example, with a photograph.

NARRATOR Here he shows Edmond de Goncourt, who, like his brother Jules, was a prominent writer, connoisseur and art collector. Bracquemond had already portrayed the brothers together.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS In this portrait, Bracquemond chooses to show Edmond by himself. He is looking directly out of the composition, engaging with the viewer, and a plume of smoke emerges from the cigarette burning in his right hand.

NARRATOR The relief sculpture at the upper left and the Japanese metalwork piece below were part of Edmond’s personal collection.

This is the first of several different states of the portrait that preserve and document Bracquemond’s creative process. In later states, the lower section would become more detailed, and include a book, among other elements.

VICTORIA SANCHO LOBIS But what we see here, harkens back to Van Dyck’s emphasis on the face and hands of his sitters. These two components, it was said of Van Dyck, were all that he needed to portray someone. And so Bracquemond, too, is isolating these physical elements of his subject and chose to print at least 20 impressions of this state before going on to realize the composition further.

Institute of Chicago, although renowned for its holdings of works by the French Impressionists, also houses a wealth of superb examples by American proponents of this distinctive style. The breadth of the museum's collection of American Impressionism is rich, with a substantial body of paintings and watercolors by Winslow Homer, who is seen today as a precursor to Impressionism, as well as impressive portfolios of work by Americans living in Europe, such as James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent, and the only American who was officially part of the French group, Mary Cassatt. In addition, important paintings and watercolors by notable artists such as Cecilia Beaux, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, George Inness, Mauric Prendergast, and John Twachtman are included, along with handsomely reproduced images by lesser-known artists who worked in the Impressionist vein. Altered and Adorned is a delightful, surprising look at how prints were used: affixed on walls; glued into albums, books, and boxes; annotated; hand-colored; or cut apart. This handsome volume introduces readers to the experimental world of printmaking in the mid-fifteenth through early seventeenth centuries and the array of objects it inspired, from illustrated books, sewing patterns, and wearable ornaments to sundials, other astronomical instruments, and anatomical prints. It features many treasures from the Art Institute of Chicago’s rich permanent collection that have never before been published, along with essays on the ways prints functioned—in some cases as three-dimensional and interactive works—and how their condition communicates their past use. The establishment of a mercantile relationship with Portugal in the late 15th century greatly increased Benin’s wealth and might. The kingdom became a regional powerhouse under a long lineage of divine rulers, or obas, and it wielded great economic and political influence. The obas also supported guilds of artists—chief among them brass casters and ivory carvers—whom they employed to produce objects that honored royal ancestors, recorded history, and glorified life at court. The sophisticated creations of Benin’s royal artists stand among the greatest works of African art today. Published in concert with the major international loan exhibition Benin—Kings and Rituals: Court Arts from Nigeria , for which the Art Institute is the sole North American venue, Benin: Royal Arts of a West African Kingdom features approximately 25 masterworks that reveal the breadth and depth of the kingdom’s artistic corpus, including finely cast bronze figures, altar heads, wall plaques and ivory tusks, pendants, and arm cuffs embellished in detailed bas-relief. An insightful essay by Art Institute curator Kathleen Bickford Berzock outlines the kingdom’s history and sheds light on these works of art by describing their making and function in the context of the royal court. These pieces embody an immediacy of form and a deceptive simplicity that reflect their makers’ deep understanding of material, process, and embellishment. This exquisite book presents a virtuoso group of African ceramics collected by printmaker and professor Keith Achepohl over the past 20 years. Focusing on the aesthetic accomplishment of each work, Achepohl has assembled a collection that ranges in date from the 3rd to the mid-20th century, spans the African continent, and displays the full range and artistry of African ceramics. Beginning with a small group of archaeological pieces that demonstrates the historical roots of ceramic traditions in Africa, the book also includes a larger selection that highlights the continuing connection between pottery and village life, secular and sacred, in Africa. Among the featured works are large, dramatic storage and water containers; mid-sized vessels designed to hold personal belongings, serve food, and brew beer and palm wine; and small bottles and embellished containers made as luxury items and for religious and ritual use. Presenting more than 130 paintings and sculptures, as well as over thirty seldom- or never-before-seen drawings and collages, this book examines all periods in Lichtenstein’s career, going well beyond his brushstrokes and the classic Pop romance and war cartoon paintings that made him famous. Roy Lichtenstein: A Retrospective features exciting new scholarship by an international team of distinguished curators, critics, and art historians. Essays by Yve-Alain Bois, Chrissie Iles, and Stephen Little, among others, give special consideration to Lichtenstein’s historical influences, from Picasso and Cubism through Surrealism, Futurism, and British Pop. Contributions by James Rondeau and Sheena Wagstaff evaluate the artist’s abstract work and late nudes. Complemented by photographs of the artist and his seminal exhibitions, the essays examine the various styles and subjects featured in paintings created throughout his lifetime. Featured are Piet Zwart, a Dutch designer who brought his minimalist aesthetic vision to ubiquitous items like biscuit boxes and postage stamps; Karel Teige, leader of the Czech avant-garde, who produced brilliant book and journal designs; his compatriot Ladislav Sutnar, who brought modernist “good design” to tableware, clothing, and children’s toys; Gustav Klutsis, who pioneered using photomontage for political purposes; Lazar (El) Lissitzky, who produced some of the most exciting book, poster, and exhibition designs of the 1920s and 1930s in Germany and Russia; and German artist John Heartfield, who worked exclusively in photomontage to design book covers, journals, and agitational posters for the Communist cause. Unmatted print developed from Salvador Dalí’s Inventions of the Monster, 1937, from The Art Institute of Chicago’s collection. © Salvador Dalí, Fundació Gala- Salvador Dalí / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York, 2022.

Inventions of the Monsters has an ominous mood. It is rife with threats of danger, from the menacing fire in the distance to the sibylline figure in the foreground with an hourglass and a butterfly, both symbols of the inevitability of death. Next to this figure sit Dalí and his wife and muse, Gala. With his native Catalonia embroiled in the Spanish Civil War, the artist surely felt great anxiety over a world without a safe haven, a world that indeed had allowed for the invention of monsters.
