I'm only trying to do some due diligence vs. some high probability, short-duration disruptions, such as a natural disaster, or a major overreaction to one or more terrorist attacks. I'm basically guarding against people completely losing their shit for no reason and cleaning out all the food and water stores nearby. Plus it may be unsafe to be out in the street for a bit. 4 | 5 | My basic rule is to have a two week buffer in the case of something minor going down, with my goal of getting to a safe place where I can last longer if required. Anything beyond that, well, I don't think this type of list is going to help. 6 | 7 | On to it then. 8 | 9 | ## Water 10 | 11 | - 10 gallons of filtered water in plastic jugs 12 | 13 | ## Food 14 | 15 | - Two boxes of MREs | http://www.amazon.com/Meals-Ready--Genuine-Military-Surplus/dp/B005I5ML36/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367902203&sr=8-1&keywords=mres 16 | 17 | ## Shelter 18 | 19 | - A basic 4-person tent | http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Sundome-4-Person-Tent-Green/dp/B004J2GUOU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367902760&sr=8-1&keywords=tent 20 | - 2 sleeping bags | http://www.amazon.com/Suisse-Sport-Adventurer-Ultra-Compactable-Sleeping/dp/B001TR7QZA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367903363&sr=8-1&keywords=sleeping+bag 21 | 22 | ## Hygeine 23 | 24 | - Baby wipes | http://www.amazon.com/BabyGanics-Fragrance-Newborn-Contains-100-Count/dp/B0042RJR74/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1367902839&sr=8-12&keywords=baby+wipes 25 | 26 | ## First Aid 27 | 28 | - A basic first aid kit | http://www.amazon.com/Johnson-All-Purpose-First-Aid/dp/B00505C0T4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367903112&sr=8-1&keywords=first+aid+kit 29 | 30 | ## Flashlights 31 | 32 | - Four solar flashlights | http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NTT45Y/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 33 | 34 | ## Clothing 35 | 36 | Nothing here yet; need to figure out what to do. 37 | 38 | ## Weapons 39 | 40 | - Glock 23c with 10 boxes of ammunition 41 | - Cold Steel Two-handed Katana | http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Handed-Katana-Machete/dp/B0030D9RFI/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1367903545&sr=8-8&keywords=cold+steel+machete 42 | - Cold Steel GI Tanto Knife | http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004H9DO4Y/ref=s9_cxhsh_co_g200_ir01?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=left-2&pf_rd_r=0C8VZC1MCE074H0QH8JV&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=1280661782&pf_rd_i=typ01 43 | 44 | 45 | ## Tools 46 | 47 | - Leathermans tool | http://www.amazon.com/Leatherman-831426-Wingman-Multi-Tool/dp/B005DI0XM4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1367903701&sr=8-2&keywords=leathermans+tool 48 | - Edge sharpener | http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O8OTNC/ref=pd_1ctyhuc__bxgy_01_03 49 | - Fire starter | http://www.amazon.com/Light-Fire-Original-Swedish-FireSteel/dp/B0013L2DKU/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1367904247&sr=1-1&keywords=lighter 50 | 51 | ## Rope 52 | 53 | - 100 feet of Type III Nylon Paracord | http://www.amazon.com/Rothco-Commercial-Paracord-550-Pound-100-Feet/dp/B000S5ODNC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1367903747&sr=8-3&keywords=rope 54 | 55 | ## Tape 56 | 57 | - Duct tape | http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Strength-Duct-1-88-Inch-60-Yard/dp/B0013B1XLA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1367910286&sr=8-2&keywords=duct+tape 58 | 59 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /README.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # BugOutBag 2 | 3 | This project will track the creation of the ideal BugOutBag for the average cautious (but not nutty) person who understands both risk and the relatively low cost of being prepared for it. It will technically cover not just the bag itself, but basically everything that you should have prepared as part of this effort, including things like water, food, etc. 4 | 5 | ## Philosophy 6 | 7 | I'm going for some level of basic preparedness without getting obsessive. The goal of my project is to be able to survive a temporary flare up of unrest as may be caused by one or more terrorist attacks, natural disasters, etc. I'm drawing that line at two weeks of survival right now, i.e. I have enough food and water to hang back off the grid until things get back to normal. Nothing ridiculous. 8 | 9 | I am *not* preparing for a major catastrophe, as 1) it's too depressing to think about, and 2) it's not really possible to be prepared for that. I think the best thing to do is to go to a safe place where food and water can be procured over long periods of time when the smaller issue happens. Then, if it turns into a major issue you have the ability to wait it out. But if things go completely sideways, and you can't even get to your safe spot, well, then it's just bad news and there's not much use in preparing for that level of drama. 10 | 11 | As such, I'm going for two weeks of isolated comfort. Food, water, weapons, a radio, flashlights, blankets, shelter, etc. Nothing major--just enough to where I'd be stupid not to have it, but not enough to last through a Siberian meteor strike. 12 | 13 | ## Sharing 14 | 15 | The idea here is to share with others so that they may be prepared as well, and to enjoy the process of optimizing what the bag contains. That will include conversation on the justification for having more or fewer supplies on hand given likely threat scenarios, etc. 16 | 17 | I, for example, would likely have 1-2 months of this available if I lived somewhere rural and had more storage. But being in a 1-bedroom apartment in San Francisco, two weeks will have to do me for now. 18 | 19 | Feel free to comment on this by forking and going another route, or by emailing me at daniel@danielmiessler.com. 20 | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
