41 | We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture that encourages people to
42 | have discussions about design systems. Our atmosphere requires an open exchange
43 | of ideas balanced by thoughtful guidelines. It would be impossible to list
44 | everything needed to create a more welcoming space, but we encourage you to

50 | * Ask questions, and seek to understand each other's context.

59 | To help participants understand behaviors that are unacceptable or run counter
60 | to our culture, we’ve listed below actions that violate our Code of Conduct

63 | This list does not cover every case. Each person you interact with is unique,
64 | and as a result can define a line of unacceptable behavior that’s unique to
65 | them. Ensuring that your behavior does not have a negative impact is your
66 | responsibility.

70 | * Negative or offensive remarks based on race, religion, color, sex (with or
71 | without sexual conduct and including pregnancy and sexual orientation involving
72 | transgender status/gender identity, and sex-stereotyping), national origin, age,
73 | disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender
74 | expression, parental status, marital status, political affiliation, mental
75 | illness, socioeconomic status or background, neuro(a)typicality, physical
76 | appearance, body size, or clothing.
77 | * Gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behavior
78 | * Unwelcome sexual attention or remarks
79 | * Threats of violence
80 | * Incitement of violence towards any individual, including encouraging a person
81 | to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm
82 | * Deliberate intimidation
83 | * Sustained disruption of discussion
84 | * Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease
85 | * Constant private messaging to pick people’s brains rather than having open
86 | conversations in public channels
87 | * Publication of non-harassing private communication
88 | * Intentionally or repeatedly referring to people in a way that rejects the
89 | validity of their gender identity; for instance, by using incorrect pronouns
90 | or forms of address (misgendering).
91 | * Microaggressions, which are small comments or questions, either intentional or
92 | unintentional, that marginalize people by communicating hostile, derogatory,
93 | or negative beliefs. Examples include:
94 | * Patronizing language or behavior
95 | * Pedantic corrections that don’t contribute to the conversation (For
96 | example: “Well actually’s…")
97 | * Assuming without asking that particular people or groups need concepts
98 | defined or explained to them. (It’s great to be sensitive to the fact that
99 | people may not be familiar with technical terms you use every day. But
100 | assuming that people are uninformed can come across as patronizing.)
101 | * Assuming that particular groups of people are technically unskilled ("So
102 | easy your grandmother could do it.")
103 | * Repeatedly interrupting or talking over someone else
104 | * Feigning surprise at someone’s lack of knowledge or awareness about a topic
105 | * The use of racially charged language to describe an individual or thing such
106 | as "thug" or “ghetto”
107 | * Referring to an individual in a way that demeans or challenges the validity
108 | of their racial identity
109 | * Mocking someone’s real or perceived accent or first language.
110 | * Retaliating against anyone who files a complaint that someone has violated
111 | this code of conduct.

113 | #### Open & Honest Sharing

115 | When it comes to sharing resources, please be open and honest about any costs
116 | associated with using the resource. If there is a price, or if there is a sign
117 | up form (which comes at a cost at providing personal information), then that
118 | needs to be made very clear when announcing.

122 | If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have
123 | any other concerns, please contact the [admins](#admins) by sending them a
124 | direct message. They'll respond as promptly as they can.

126 | The admins will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting
127 | victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom
128 | we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about
129 | them. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

133 | Participants asked to stop any inappropriate or harassing behavior must comply

136 | If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the admins may take any action
137 | they deem appropriate, including warning the offender and up to and including
138 | expulsion from this slack and identifying the participant publicly as someone
139 | about whom we've received complaints.

143 | Because this is a free slack account, we have restricted scrollback, but
144 | Slack--the company--retains complete logs of all channels and direct messages
145 | back to the creation of Design Systems Slack. Slack is a U.S. company and
146 | therefore subject to subpoenas from U.S. courts. Our logs may be subject to
147 | subpoena and could become public as part of legal proceedings.
