Since the workshop bounty program launched, I've been spending hours reviewing each workshop, which both prevented me from doing anything else at Hack Club and wasn't actually effective at getting through the backlog. At the end of last week, I decided to spend a lot less time reviewing workshop bounties and be a lot stricter around closing bounties that don't meet the rules—and so far, it's been super effective. I think I can get through the rest of the backlog with an hour or two of work today, and I'm pretty confident I won't fall into another hole with this approach. If you haven't submitted a workshop yet, I highly recommend doing so! Writing a good workshop that becomes official Hack Club curriculum feels _super_ rewarding ([I know from experience!](https://workshops.hackclub.com/sound_galaxy/)). Plus, we'll pay you $200 for it! 8 | 9 | My goal for the rest of this week: I want to talk to a bunch of club leaders and get a read on how clubs are doing this year. Two weeks ago, I sent you [the first edition](https://github.com/hackclub/club-leader-updates/blob/main/updates/11-10-2020.md) of a new experiment I'm trying: a weekly-ish update for every club leader who I've onboarded or otherwise been in contact with this year. This is the second edition. 6 | 7 | Last week, I stumbled across [this blog post](https://mango.pdf.zone/finding-former-australian-prime-minister-tony-abbotts-passport-number-on-instagram) written by a programmer who accidentally found the former Australian Prime Minister's passport number using the "Network" tab of the dev tools in their browser (what you see when you "inspect element") on Qantas's website. This sounds crazy, complicated, and illegal, but we actually use that same trick to access undocumented Slack API methods to write cool apps for our community that we wouldn't otherwise be able to write. This got me thinking: what if we introduced a new type of content for clubs—not workshops, but guided journeys that end in a competition or prize? This can be anything from a scavenger hunt using dev tools, to a weird website building competition, to [Code in the Dark](https://github.com/codeinthedark/codeinthedark.github.io). 8 | 9 | After reading that blog post, I started doing some high-level thinking around the clubs program. There's work to be done across the board, but right now I really want to focus on that "???" section. We present the workshops as the "official Hack Club curriculum", as if running only workshops will create successful clubs—but in reality, every club I'm aware of that only ran workshops and nothing else became stale and their club members began to leave (including my own club!). Getting out of this hole is difficult and stressful, and I believe it's the cause of death for most clubs. I think the idea I had—providing guided journeys and fun events in addition to workshops—could be the missing piece that keeps clubs running. 15 | 16 | I'm going to spend this week exploring this idea—and hopefully, by next week, I'll have a demo to share. Too many new Hack Club leaders ultimately fail because they can't figure out how to get past this barrier. Hack Club Workshops lower it tremendously—but translating a workshop to a great club meeting presents its own major challenge. I ran a terrible club for nearly 2 years before I felt like I figured it out. Many of you have similar stories. When you first start a Hack Club, you should feel confident that Hack Club HQ has you covered for your first few months as you build the skills to run a great club on your own. I try to tell as many club leaders as I can about this meeting, because I know a lot of you are struggling to run compelling, high-energy online club meetings right now, and Claire's workshop is a perfect example of one. But... most of you have never heard of Claire's workshop. Isn't that a problem? In it, Zach describes the clubs program as a "club-in-a-box". For some reason, I had never heard this specific term, but I think it's perfect, and I want it to be part of our branding again. I'm thinking about this "whiteboarding" session that I shared last time: 16 | 17 | ![2 things brainstorming from last time](https://cloud-mkbo816t8-hack-club-bot.vercel.app/32-things.jpeg) 18 | 19 | From talking with club leaders, and from my own experience leading a Hack Club, I've found that if you don't "switch up" your club meetings, your club is likely to become stale, and people are likely to leave. In October, the problem with the workshops was that we literally didn't have enough workshops to last most club leaders a semester. Now, we have enough workshops to last most club leaders multiple years, but club leaders will still need to find a way to "switch up" their club meetings every once in a while to prevent their meetings from becoming stale. Many club leaders struggle to do this when they get started. So how can HQ make club leaders' lives easier? Broadly, I see 2 paths: 20 | 21 | 1. Form deep relationships with every one of you. Spend lots of time talking to all club leaders, talking through issues and brainstorming meetings. Establish the norm that regular phone calls between you and HQ are part of being a Hack Club leader. 22 | 2. Introduce lots of workshops that feel different and unique, so that even if all you do as a club leader is read through a workshop every week, you'll still be able to run a decent club. 23 | 24 | Number 1 is the tried and true method. It's what Zach (the founder of Hack Club) did back in the very early days of Hack Club, when we were called hackEDU and had 10 total active clubs. I do want to do some of that this month. But "talking to club leaders" is not a real clubs _program_, and more importantly, it's not scalable. 25 | 26 | My eyes are mostly focused on number 2 right now. What if there were a way to introduce dozens of workshops that were all a lot different than most of the current workshops? What if every workshop were [Hacking Kahoot](https://workshops.hackclub.com/kahoot/), [The Adventures of Hack Island](https://workshops.hackclub.com/save_hack_club_bank/), or [Pixel Art Pad](https://workshops.hackclub.com/pixel_art_pad/)? What does that look like? Maybe a workshop team?
