We send it every other week, only to our supporters and friends. If you'd prefer not to receive it, click [here](https://postal.hackclub.com/unsubscribe-success.php?c=179)._ 6 | 7 | Dear friends, 8 | 9 | Zach here, founder of [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/). I'm writing from my co-quarantine with several members of the Hack Club team in Vermont. We have a beautiful view of the Green Mountains out here. 10 | 11 | Entering our third week of nationwide school closures, Hack Club continues to gain momentum, with more students joining, another new donor, an exciting new video series with tech leaders, and some incredible student projects shipped. 12 | 13 | I'm excited to announce Elon Musk will be the next guest speaker for Hack Club's ask-me-anything video series (AMAs). This is a private call for students, but you're welcome to listen in; please email me directly. 14 | 15 | On March 27th, we had our 2nd AMA with Hack Club students featuring Facebook's former Head of Product, Chris Cox. Chris talked about early Facebook days, managing 2.5 billion users, spaces vs. tabs, and the world he would create in 500 BC. More than 100 Hack Clubbers participated. Thanks for Ron Conway and Sam Lessin for introducing us to Chris. [Watch the recording.](https://youtu.be/1pn8h2q3Cas) 16 | 17 | ![Students in Chris Cox AMA video call](chris_cox_ama.jpg) 18 | 19 | Hack Club is doing two things with our students right now: (1) offering a friendly online community with mental health support and (2) helping our students use this time to build projects. To provide support, our Slack channel for girls and femme people in Hack Club had their first meetup (over Zoom) over the weekend and has started hanging out regularly. 20 | 21 | ![Students in Orpheus Legion video call](orpheus_legion.jpg) 22 | 23 | Our students are building and launching projects at an incredible rate. Two of our favorites since our last update are a [meadow for your computer](http://twitter.com/SamNChiet/status/1244088898990379009) & a [poem set to an original piano song](https://thesephist.com/you/). This past Wednesday and Thursday, we hosted two "Code in the Dark" activity nights, where 30 Hack Club students competed in a series of 5-minute website-building challenges. Meanwhile, GitHub featured the [Predict COVID](https://predictcovid.com/) site Hack Club's Lachlan Campbell and I made [on their blog](https://github.blog/2020-03-23-open-collaboration-on-covid-19/). We have much more to share as we continue building out our curriculum. 24 | 25 | To help our students build both their networks & technical skills, Hack Club became the official student partner of the [**COVID-19 Global Hackathon**](https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10111707674548151), which attracted 18,000 engineers from 175 countries to build COVID solutions (which we believe makes it the largest hackathon ever). I got my first tech job after working on a hackathon with experienced developers when I was 14, so it was great to see hundreds of our students participate, including making a judge-favorite project [Notes for Support](https://www.notesforsupport.org/) (this is a remarkable project, Gina Choi—Hack Club leader and HS junior—has already sent 1,200 notes to hospitals through it). Facebook is leading the organizing, and they'll be announcing featured projects tomorrow with a website built by Lachlan. [Read the update](https://covid-global-hackathon.devpost.com/updates/12469-day-2-wrap-up) they sent during the event. 26 | 27 | Finally, we want to thank our generous donors. Gerry Ohrstrom of New York City pledged $20k to Hack Club this week, and is introducing us to two friends of his who might be interested in learning more about Hack Club's mission to improve tech & science for young people across the country. We so appreciate everything our community does to support us. 28 | 29 | I hope you and your families are safe and healthy. Expect another update in 2 weeks. 30 | 31 | \- Zach 32 | 33 | -- 34 | Zach Latta 35 | Founder, Hack Club | zach@hackclub.com | [Donate](https://hackclub.com/donate) 36 | [@zachlatta](https://twitter.com/zachlatta) / [fb](https://facebook.com/crynix) / [web](https://zachlatta.com/) / [github](https://github.com/zachlatta) 37 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /001/chris_cox_ama.jpg: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/vip-newsletters/e4b416972f2a69dcdd9d09e76ab518b0c5a52da9/001/chris_cox_ama.jpg -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /001/orpheus_legion.jpg: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/vip-newsletters/e4b416972f2a69dcdd9d09e76ab518b0c5a52da9/001/orpheus_legion.jpg -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /002/README.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | _Sent Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at 1:50 PM Eastern Time._ 2 | 3 | Dear all, 4 | 5 | Elon Musk is speaking exclusively to [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/) students this Friday. See details below if you'd like to join the audience. 6 | 7 | _Now, this is your 2-minute, bimonthly read on how we’re building Hack Club—thanks for this time together._ 8 | 9 | This week, I'm talking with a California school superintendent about Hack Club working with partners to systemically supporting remote education for some of the 15 million teenagers out of school. To answer this question, last week we sent student-turned-staffer Matthew Stanciu to join our Slack community under a pseudonym. Based on his journey & interactions, he’s now built an all-new welcome experience now live on Slack as of yesterday morning. 26 | 27 | In our last newsletter, we mentioned our partnership with Sam Lessin and Facebook making a website for the COVID-19 Global Hackathon. Our student-turned-staffer Lachlan Campbell made it happen, and we had 23k unique visitors & 61k pageviews in the first week. Many are self-quarantining. Many will feel isolated, and lose out on education. Others might become sick, or deal with grief and financial insecurity. 10 | 11 | Hack Club is moving quickly. Our student community includes over 7,000 students in our Slack and 342 student clubs nationwide in nearly all 50 states. We represent the US's most technically-talented network of high schoolers, all oriented to lead in problem-solving in their communities. 12 | 13 | Together, we will help our country get through this crisis. You are needed. After you read this email, please: 14 | 15 | - Send us ideas. Hack Club HQ is urgently meeting all week. 16 | - Make introductions to those with whom we could partner 17 | - Volunteer your skills (email me) 18 | 19 | **Hack Club's team in the last 4 days:** 20 | 21 | - Last Friday, we announced a **3-day online COVID-19 hackathon** on our 7k-member Slack ("Slackathon!"). Hack Club students from more than a dozen states teamed up in self-made online groups to ship projects using RedwoodJS, Ruby on Rails, Java, HTML & CSS, Google Docs, and more. We are sharing student projects below and on our Twitter. 22 | - We [guided student leaders](https://hackclub.com/covid19/) through **canceling their hackathons**. We issued detailed sample letters for talking to sponsors and modeled how to lead responsibly & safely. 23 | - We shared sources of reliable data on COVID-19, helping students identify trusted news sources; and modeled the problem-solving mindset of a hacker. 24 | - We prepared to increase our online challenges and [published **new curriculum**](https://workshops.hackclub.com/). 25 | - We have (re-)**hired** NYU first-year and Hack Club alumni [Lachlan Campbell](https://lachlanjc.me/) this week (who made our website) and Hack Club alumni [Matthew Stanciu](https://matthewstanciu.me/) last month, who recently graduated high school in Indiana. 26 | 27 | **Our upcoming steps:** 28 | 29 | Hack Club is preparing for worse-case scenarios, in which we must support sick students, and those dealing with deaths, economic desperation, hunger, isolation, and panic. Hack Club is prioritizing reaching these students with programming, support, and online community. We will also support educational partners by modeling successful online education. 30 | 31 | - We're on the phone with current and potential partners including GitHub, NASA, and Brookings and others to create projects/plans in anticipation of months of school closures. 32 | - Partnering with the Congressional App Challenge, in which HC students create apps to respond to community needs & U.S. Congress members amplify Hack Club students' best work. 33 | - Hack Club isn't just about coding---it's about young people using their creativity and agency to execute on big ideas. Hack Club HQ is creating more (online) hackathons, expanding our programming and activities so students can lead in problem-solving in their communities using their technical/online skills. 34 | - This week, Hack Club leadership will be discussing how to broaden our community to students most in need. This could look like helping guide students who want to start virtual club meetings to build legitimate local communities, but we're just starting to think of the possibilities here. Send us your ideas! 35 | - We will be discussing the possibility of making more emergency hires to build out projects/programming. 36 | 37 | The world is more uncertain than ever right now, but it underscores the importance of Hack Club's mission of building a new generation of young people solving problems with the hacker mindset. We're pursuing every opportunity we can to help students, and we'd love your help wherever it makes sense. We've always been trying to build the world we want to live in, and through this unprecedented challenge, we can act together and emerge even stronger and more resilient. 38 | 39 | You can check out what our students have built over the last 72 hours below. Thank you so much for being part of what we're doing. 40 | 41 | \- Zach Latta 42 | 43 | **COVID-19 Slackathon student projects:** 44 | 45 | - Web app / Google Classroom tool for teachers to administer worksheets remotely 46 | - [Database](https://i.imgur.com/fGnNhDd.png) to monitor food and household supplies 47 | - [In-game video calling](https://i.imgur.com/goEmLWJ.png) in Minecraft 48 | - Slideshow for children explaining exponential growth through a fable 49 | - [Interactive website visualization](https://countrycovid19.netlify.com/) of the COVID-19 pandemic by country (and first open source production project using [RedwoodJS](https://redwoodjs.com/)). 50 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /004/README.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | _Sent Wednesday, March 25th, 2020._ 2 | 3 | # VIP Hack Club Update - Week 2 of COVID 4 | 5 | Hi all,  6 | 7 | During these very hard days of COVID-19, I am appreciating the Hack Club community more than ever. Please email me back and let me know how you're doing. 8 | 9 | This week, Hack Club's Slack had ~4,000 messages per day, double our usual volume. This Sunday, we hosted our first student AMA with GitHub founder and RedwoodJS creator Tom Preston-Werner. Nearly 100 students tuned in from 11 countries. Thank you [@mojombo](https://twitter.com/mojombo). 10 | 11 | ![](tom_ama.png) 12 | 13 | Before nationwide school closures, Hack Club students led nearly 400 after-school computer science clubs in almost all 50 states. Since none of them can meet, we've moved entirely online. 14 | 15 | 1. Since last Monday, our high schoolers built & shipped dozens of projects. A few highlights: a visualization of [the disparity in access to COVID testing](https://testing.predictcovid.com/), a [procedural planet generator](https://i.imgur.com/44BZTKk.png), and [two of our students partnering with a factory in China to produce free N95 masks for essential USA workers using Hack Club Bank](https://halo.angelhacks.org/). Students are tooling around with Rust, Next.js, HTML, checking out new technologies like RedwoodJS, and pushing through coding problems together on Slack. 16 | 2. Yesterday, Hack Club students were personally invited to be a partner at the Global COVID-19 Hackathon alongside engineers from Facebook, Microsoft, Pinterest, TikTok, Twitter, Slack, and more. [See Mark Zuckerberg's post about it here.](https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10111707674548151) Breaking news: Hack Club students are together building the website for it! [Click here for an early preview.](https://globalcovid.now.sh/) We're also going to "storm the hackathon" with our students and see if we can win. 17 | 3. We hosted a week-long "COVID Command Center"---where students met nightly on Zoom calls with Chris Walker (Head of Clubs) and our team to check out new projects, connect, learn & support each other while being physically disconnected. Students taught each other fun skills including creative writing, calculus, and game development in Rust through [a series of 16 workshops](https://cccs.hackclub.com/) over the weekend. 18 | 19 | What can you do? We've seen members of the Hack Club community taking action. Hack Club supporters Theresa and Tom Preston-Werner gave $1 million to those most vulnerable in San Francisco, including children and hospitals. Also, SV angel investor Ron Conway launched the [Frontline Responders Fund,](https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/24/flexport-arnold-schwarzenegger-and-others-launch-a-fund-to-get-supplies-to-frontline-responders/) raising nearly $4 million so far. Ron also generously donated to Hack Club this week, and we thank him for thinking of us. 20 | 21 | Our 5-year goal is to have a Hack Club in 50% of U.S. high schools; our 10-year goal is to create a generation of problem solvers equipped with the "hacker" mindset and advanced 21st-century tech skills. Every day a new student joins Hack Club and ships, we get closer to that world. 22 | 23 | In a world getting less certain by the day, Hack Club is providing one of the most friendly and important spaces of connection, creativity, & passion for teenagers around the world. Thank you for your support. 24 | 25 | \- Zach 26 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /004/tom_ama.png: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/vip-newsletters/e4b416972f2a69dcdd9d09e76ab518b0c5a52da9/004/tom_ama.png -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /005/README.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | _Sent on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at 2:35 PM Eastern Time._ 2 | 3 | Hi everyone, 4 | 5 | More than 90,000 people watched Hack Club’s sit-down with Elon Musk 11 days ago. Last month, over 600 new high school students joined Hack Club, our weekly Slack activity went up 50%, and Hack Club’s Twitter gained nearly 7,500 followers. 6 | 7 | Elon said Hack Club students “asked better questions than all the mainstream media” and closed with “I’m not one for false praise…I’m much more optimistic about the future after having this conversation.” [Watch the interview here](https://youtu.be/riru9OzScwk) or [this short clip](https://youtu.be/3e99aOUSw-Q). 8 | 9 | _Here’s your 2-minute read on how we’re building [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/)—sent to 83 major donors and friends. Thanks for this time together._ 10 | 11 | **How you can help:** 12 | 13 | * Introduce us to one of these 10 people for a future AMA: _Mark Zuckerberg, Barack Obama, Edward Snowden, Serena Williams, Patrick Collison, Anne Wojcicki, Jack Dorsey, Melinda Gates_ 14 | * Take a 15-minute phone call with me next week to share how you hired during the early stages of your company. I want to get our 5th full-time hire right. (Thanks Tom Preston-Werner for our call yesterday.) 15 | * Be part of our movement to build a generation of hackers in every high school. It’ll take $10 million and 5 years. Ask to read our 1-page vision & share feedback. 16 | 17 | **Our updates:** 18 | 19 | Two corporations reached out to Hack Club in the last 2 weeks: **Ernst and Young** inquired about being on our board; then last week, **Adobe Education** offered to have Hack Club become their high school partner. Currently, Hack Club’s only corporate partner is GitHub, but we’re considering both these companies. 20 | 21 | Alumni & staffer Lachlan Campbell made [a new homepage for Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/) in 13 hours, showcasing our massive program changes post-COVID. Our new goal: make Hack Club the best place to be a teenager into technology on the internet. 22 | 23 | Last week, we ran an AMA with Patreon CEO Jack Conte, which [you can watch here](https://youtu.be/QPuQavijZOo). Tomorrow, students will join [Simone Giertz](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3KEoMzNz8eYnwBC34RaKCQ), a kickass 29-year-old female inventor famous for [converting her Tesla into an electric truck](https://youtu.be/jKv_N0IDS2A) and for [making dozens of viral silly robot GIFs](https://giphy.com/gifs/g9Hg6T2GHrSPS/html5). 30% of our RSVPs are women, our highest yet. If you’d like to watch, it’s at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET tomorrow—we’ll tweet the livestream link [@hackclub](https://twitter.com/@hackclub) shortly beforehand (or feel free to email me). 24 | 25 | To onboard the hundreds of incoming teenagers to our Slack, last week 18-year-old Hack Club alumni Matthew Stanciu built [@Clippy](https://postal.hackclub.com/uploads/1588798337.png), a humorous bot that introduces new students to Hack Club’s Slack and kickstarts them in making new friends. 26 | 27 | The emotional toll of quarantine on Hack Clubbers is evident reading some of the 8,000 daily Slack messages. Many students are asking each other for coding help, but our anonymous `#confessions` channel shows the strain of not seeing friends for nearly 2 months. We hope to make Hack Club the best place to be a teenager on the internet and we’re seeing so many students supporting each other, having thoughtful conversations, and building & shipping amazing projects such as these: 28 | 29 | * [Justina C.](https://justina.me/) (Vernon Hills, IL) launched [reflect, a Chrome extension for more mindful browsing](https://getreflect.app/) 30 | * [Dalton C.](https://daltoncraven.me/) (alum from Mason, OH now at USC) made [a website with mental health resources](https://anti-stigma.netlify.app/) for his classmates 31 | * [Kat H.](https://katmh.com/) (alum from Lowell, MA now at MIT) is starting an online book club during COVID, [Anytime Book Club](http://anytimebook.club/) 32 | * [Neel R.](https://neelr.dev/) (San Ramon, CA) used Next.js & the Prismic CMS to [rebuild his blog Notebook](https://notebook.neelr.dev/stories/Xq9m_hEAACMAmxN_) as a static site 33 | * James K. The week prior, we had **Simone Giertz**, a YouTube star, roboticist, & incredible maker who you’ve probably seen online in GIFs before. [You can watch Simone here](https://youtu.be/c1KDdRGY6XQ). 20 | 21 | ![Screenshot of Zoom call with Simone](https://postal.hackclub.com/uploads/1589995075.png) 22 | 23 | Our upcoming guests include **Audrey Tang**, the Digital Minister of Taiwan, on June 4th; and **Patrick Collison**, founder & CEO of Stripe, on June 11th. 24 | 25 | **What are Hack Clubbers up to?** 26 | 27 | This Friday, we’re launching [Hack Club’s Summer of Making](https://summer.hackclub.com/), led entirely by Hack Clubber Sam P., a 14-year-old Australian freshman in Singapore. The program will partner Hack Club students with professional developer mentors to complete a project this summer. We’ve helped them partner with GitHub, who is contributing $50K to help students buy needed hardware. 28 | 29 | As the school year nears its ending, many of the 15 million US high school students are thinking about missed graduations, lost summer plans, and whether schools will reopen next fall. Claire W., 15 from Torrance, CA, is putting together a virtual Hack Club graduation for Hack Clubbers worldwide. 30 | 31 | Hack Club students are shipping like crazy. Check out some of the many student projects from the past 2 weeks: 32 | 33 | Hi there! 34 | 35 | * Kate M. (North Carolina), a brand new member, followed Hack Club’s Personal Website tutorial to write [her first-ever website](https://darkorangelittlequeries.ktmize.repl.co/) 36 | * [Felix M.](https://kognise.dev/) (Brooklyn, NY) made a web-based [key/value database client](https://dash.s1.kognise.dev/) using Next.js & Ant Design 37 | * Rishi K. (Brampton, Canada) published [Hoot, a command line schoolwork tracker](https://github.com/rishiosaur/hoot) 38 | * [Theo B.](https://tmb.sh/) (student staff from Boston, MA) launched [Tempus, an easy timezone app](https://tempus.im/), with Next.js & Moment.js 39 | * Sam P. (Singapore) shipped a [personal website](https://www.sampoder.com/) & a [live location tracker](https://find.sampoder.com/) of his phone 40 | 41 | One project we’d particularly highlight is [Hackagotchi](https://github.com/hackagotchi/hackagotchi), which is a Slack video game built by 4 students (Cedrick H., Eleeza, Rishi K., & Richard) across 3 countries, based on our community’s fake currency called GP. It features original illustration & animation, thousands of lines of code, and a growing userbase across the Hack Club Slack. They’ve received an external $1,000 grant for being one of the first games built in the Rust programming language. 42 | 43 | We’re working away every day at building an amazing place on the internet for teenagers from all over the world to be creative, learn technical skills, and make friends. It’s humbling every morning to wake up to everything they’re sharing. Thanks for reading. 44 | 45 | Best, 46 | Zach 47 | 48 | _This newsletter was co-written with my COO, Christina Asquith, and head of storytelling, Lachlan Campbell, a former Hack Club student._ 49 | 50 | \-- 51 | 52 | Zach Latta 53 | Founder, Hack Club | [zach@hackclub.com](mailto:zach@hackclub.com) | [Donate](https://hackclub.com/donate/) 54 | [@zachlatta](https://twitter.com/zachlatta) / [fb](https://facebook.com/crynix) / [web](https://zachlatta.com/) / [github](https://github.com/zachlatta) 55 | 56 | _(like in all Hack Club emails, we respect your privacy and don't track whether you open this email or click links in it._ 57 | 58 | _we only send this update to a small group of friends and supporters, if you'd prefer to not receive these, that's ok! click [here](https://postal.hackclub.com/unsubscribe-success.php?c=181))_ 59 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /007/README.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | _Sent on Thursday, June 4, 2020, at 3:40 PM Eastern Time._ 2 | 3 | Hi everyone, 4 | 5 | This week, Hack Club is donating technical equipment to Black and underserved Hack Club students in need. 6 | 7 | [![Our tweet about Black Lives Matter](https://postal.hackclub.com/uploads/1591301189.jpg)](https://twitter.com/hackclub/status/1266565380820160514?s=20) 8 | 9 | _Here’s your 3-minute read on how we’re building [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/)—sent to 80 recipients, including our major donors & friends. Last week, Adam Ross introduced us to the founders of Goldieblox and Piazza, both very helpful introductions. 20 | 21 | **We have three big items to share from the past 2 weeks:** 22 | 23 | 1. Growth update: 450% increase in student Slack activity in the past 3 months 24 | 2. Launching Summer of Making: 470 pre-registrations so far, starts June 18th 25 | 3. Transparency: Hack Club spent $62K in May and we’re breaking it down publicly in our first finance update 26 | 27 | **1\. Growth update** 28 | 29 | Since February, Slack activity has grown from 2K daily student messages to now averaging 9K daily through all of May, a 450% increase in activity. 30 | 31 | Likewise, our Twitter following grew from 1.8K to 11.8K in that same period. We now believe Hack Club is the most active community of teenage developers on the internet. 32 | 33 | **2\. Summer of Making launch** 34 | 35 | Since our last newsletter, Hack Club students announced: [Summer of Making](https://summer.hackclub.com/), in which hundreds of students will be paired with professional engineer mentors as they build a project of their choice over the summer. Students building hardware projects can get electronics, soldering irons, and supplies granted to them through a $50K fund negotiated by Hack Club with GitHub. 36 | 37 | 15-year-old Sam P. and friends launched this. Read [GitHub’s blog post](https://github.blog/2020-05-28-introducing-hack-clubs-summer-of-making/). Thanks Adafruit & Arduino for offering discounts. Plus, founder Limor Fried speaks with Hack Club students on June 25th. 38 | 39 | Seven members of the Hack Club team are now together in an inn in Vermont surrounded by whiteboards with students on the phone to get everything together. 40 | 41 | **3\. Transparency** 42 | 43 | In our last update, we [open-sourced](https://hackclub.com/elon/) our bank account ($813K) and enabled all our students on [Hack Club Bank](https://hackclub.com/bank/) to do the same with their Hack Clubs, hackathons, and nonprofits. 44 | 45 | Today, we’re publishing our [first financial transparency report](https://hackclub.com/transparency/may-2020/), where we lay out how we spent $62K on salaries, subscriptions, and expenses in May 2020. For students learning to build their own nonprofits, they can see how Hack Club spends every dollar. For donors both large and small, this makes it easy to hold us accountable. 46 | 47 | These VIP updates will also be published six weeks after you read them on [our website](https://hackclub.com/vip-newsletters/) as well as on [GitHub](https://github.com/hackclub/vip-newsletters) to serve as a model to our students. 48 | 49 | **Looking ahead:** 50 | 51 | Tonight at 8 PM Eastern / 5 PM Pacific we’re hosting a student AMA with [Audrey Tang](https://events.hackclub.com/ama-with-audrey-tang), the Digital Minister of Taiwan. They are the first transgender person to hold a high-level office in any government and leads Taiwan’s contact tracing program (all while being a deeply technical hacker active on [GitHub](https://github.com/audreyt)). 52 | 53 | Next Thursday, we’re hosting [Patrick Collison](https://events.hackclub.com/ama-with-patrick-collison), the founder and CEO of Stripe. Thank you to Ron Conway for connecting Patrick to Hack Club. 54 | 55 | AMAs bring technology leaders into personal conversations with Hack Club students across the country. Recordings of our first 6 AMAs are all publicly available on [our YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQzO0jpcRkP-9eWKMpJyB0w). It’s not an event, or a program. It’s a theme for this summer and a challenge to every teenager: What will you make? What will you learn? It has 3 components: 38 | 39 | * $50k in hardware grants from GitHub to fund electronics projects, for both beginners & advanced hackers. 40 | * Every day this summer, Hack Clubbers will be sharing short video & photo updates with a new Slack tool & “Scrapbook” we’ve built. 41 | * Slack + weekly Zoom events: All summer, we’ll be running weekly live events, including coding workshops, office hours, show & tells, and more. 42 | 43 | We’ve already had 500 students pre-register, and we expect GitHub’s email announcement tomorrow morning to drive another 1,000 signups. 44 | 45 | Students sent over **250,000 messages in the last month** on our Slack—asking for coding help, working with their peers on projects, and using it as a social space. We had an enormous bump in activity after Elon, yet our growth continues. Already, 1,639 project updates have been posted by students to [scrapbook.hackclub.com](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/). 6 | 7 | In the 1960s, Stewart Brand envisioned applying technology for art, music, and greater freedoms. Hack Club’s vision is also to be greater than just a home for technically-talented teenagers: Hack Club is about learning to do what you want in the world and how code can help you do it. That means creating spaces to develop people with a “hacker mindset”—curious, optimistic, relentless problem solvers. 8 | 9 | Hack Club is opt-in and student-first (no teachers / no parents). And, when it works, we don’t just create good coders, we also help build good people. Check out Summer of Making; we hope it facilitates the most original, creative activities for high schoolers this summer. 10 | 11 | _“Whenever i open up the scrapbook site, i feel like i’m getting a big hug by all the other hack clubbers at once” —Austin, 17-year-old Hack Club leader, New York_ 12 | 13 | _**This is our 9th VIP update, your 2-minute read on how we’re building [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/)—sent to 80 recipients, including our major donors & friends. They’d be great allies for Hack Club. 21 | * Conversations help challenge our ideas, share our work, and build our donor network. Who could you introduce us to? But the top-down, pre-internet public school model just doesn’t translate well online—it may partially serve the most privileged & diligent teenagers with the best teachers, but most will be left behind. 6 | 7 | Meanwhile, Hack Club is high-energy, growing, and students are shipping projects daily using the most advanced tech available to humankind. You can see the magic happening at Hack Club in just the last 24 hours [in the Hack Club Summer Scrapbook](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/). 8 | 9 | _Here’s your 2-minute read on how [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/) is growing—sent to 80 recipients, including our major donors & friends. Thank you Tom & Theresa Preston-Werner for your donation. From a student recipient: “I have received the order receipt. I think I’m crying a bit…you have no idea how much this means to me. No words can explain how happy I am.” 25 | 26 | **Hack Club students are shipping!** 27 | 28 | **[Summer of Making](https://summer.hackclub.com/) is our student summer project.** It’s centered around students pushing themselves, building their own projects, and sharing daily progress updates. We’ve shipped hardware to 118 students in 25 countries across all 6 continents ($15,514 worth), funded by GitHub. Meanwhile, 297 students have published 2,569 posts to [our Scrapbook](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/), where we’ve added [emoji tags](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/r/package) & brought back [webrings](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/lachlanjc) from the 90s. 29 | 30 | * [@aurora42lambda](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/aurora42lambda), 18, from France, hasn’t missed a day since the Summer of Making started  31 | * [Prithul](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/prithul0218), 17, from Bangladesh, is building amazing hardware 32 | * In Slack, Patrick H. made [The Lab](https://thelab.gallery/), a gallery of p5.js & dataviz projects 33 | * [Ben A.](https://github.com/benaubin), 17, from Texas, made a [React input for phone numbers](https://github.com/benaubin/react-headless-phone-input) 34 | 35 | **Fun fact:** 96% of students in [Hack Club’s GitHub organization](https://github.com/hackclub/) have published code on GitHub in the past month, more than nearly any other K-12 coding organization. 36 | 37 | **Ask-Me-Anythings and Hack Club guests** 38 | 39 | Last week, Hack Club students met [Dylan Field](https://twitter.com/zoink), co-founder of Figma, for an AMA. Hack Club teenagers host these calls—this time, [Rishi K.](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/rishi) (he/him, 14, Brampton, Canada) hosted. You can watch a 2-minute excerpt from the AMA where Dylan talks about [how he wants to grow design education](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AhTfZ_jT-A). Next week, we have white-hat hacker [Tommy Devoss](https://www.businessinsider.com/tommy-devoss-hackerone-bug-bounty-hunter-2020-2), who earned $1 million from bug bounty hunting & has served time for his hacking, hosted by Reese A. This week she’s hosting a React tutorial followed by a chat with JavaScript star [Max Stoiber](https://mxstbr.com/). 42 | 43 | **Hack Club Bank** 44 | 45 | Last week we signed our biggest client ever onto [Hack Club Bank](https://hackclub.com/bank/). They’re a new 501(c)(3) called Mesto run by Andrey Doronichev, who leads the Product team at Google Stadia. Mesto has a budget of $1M/year and in its first week on Bank processed $30K in donations, more than any other project in Hack Club Bank’s history. They are using Hack Club Bank’s Transparency Mode to make their finances fully transparent at . 46 | 47 | Bank helps students build in the real world. In the past, students couldn’t execute on big initiatives because minors are legally forbidden from starting bank accounts. Hack Club Bank gives any club, hackathon, or nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, debit cards, and a streamlined app for managing funds. Even in quarantine, students are building everything from online [hackathons](https://hackathons.hackclub.com/) to COVID responses to grassroots [nonprofits](https://girlgeniusmag.tech/). We recently [shipped donations](https://changelog.bank.hackclub.com/donations-new-design-more-156431) along with a refreshed design. We have an aggressive development schedule for the next few weeks. 48 | 49 | **Hiring Students** 50 | 51 | Before we hire students in our community full-time, we first give them two weeks of a paid trial for them to bring their initial ideas to fruition. In the last two weeks, we’ve given three new students trial periods. [Chaleb P.](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/iamcpdev) (they/them, 15, Miramar, FL) has joined working on Hack Club Bank operations. [Malte L.](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/malte) (they/them, 17, Germany) is improving our Slack community and [Amogh C.](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/amogh) (he/him, 17, Storrs, CT) is organizing & hosting live events, both with staffer Melody. 52 | 53 | _Hack Club is a wholesome place where teeangers can make friends and become technical. Tom Steyer cares about developing youth in America. Can you introduce us? 15 | * Volunteer yourself or someone great for an AMA this fall. How about Julia Hartz? 16 | * Wish us luck—next week we ask GitHub to renew our [partnership](https://github.blog/2019-09-04-github-and-hack-club-bring-computer-science-resources-to-high-schools/) for a 2nd year. 17 | 18 | **Special thanks!** 19 | 20 | * Thanks to Tim & Kate Clem for their financial gift. 21 | * Thanks to Amjad Masad of Repl.it for donating an hour of his time for a 1:1 with me. 22 | * Thank you to David Cramer of Sentry for donating an hour of his time for a 1:1 with me last Friday. We opened up the call to Hack Club students. (David also donated 15 iPad Pros to our students earlier this year.) 23 | 24 | **4 ways to a technical year:** 25 | 26 | Hack Club’s mission is to create a generation of teenagers who think creatively and build with code. Hack Club has been growing steadily since 2014, but really picked up this March after schools closed. Slack messages have jumped from 2,000 a day to over 10,000 a day. We’re making plans to hire for new positions. 27 | 28 | This September, we plan to support students to: 29 | 30 | 1. Lead standout [computer science clubs](https://hackclub.com/clubs/) with their friends, online and inside of in-person pods; 31 | 2. Develop big ideas via [deep talk AMA conversations](https://hackclub.com/amas/) with tech industry leaders; 32 | 3. Make friendships on [the Hack Club Slack](https://hackclub.com/slack/) that are wholesome, fun, intellectual, and technical; 33 | 4. Bank them. We help students execute big on their ideas with access to raising & spending tax-deductible donations using [Hack Club Bank](https://hackclub.com/bank/). 34 | 35 | This week, staff Matthew & Dina (both 18) are prototyping online club meetings; Christina & Dina are experimenting with AMA formats, especially for young women; and I’m working with Max to create new features to improve Slack's utility as a tool for our community. Lachlan, 19, and Max are in the early stages of building Hack Club Bank 2.0 to launch in September. 36 | 37 | **For students** 38 | 39 | Alex Stamos, former Chief Security Officer at Facebook, joins Hack Club August 6th. Thanks to hacker Tommy DeVoss, who talked on July 23rd with students about earning a million dollars as a bug-bounty hunter. His dogs, Jackson and Mercy, [joined in](https://twitter.com/hackclub/status/1286404241914056710?s=20)! Later in August, indie game developer [Nicky Case](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicky_Case) will visit. 40 | 41 | After a successful trial period, we’ve hired student [Amogh C.](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/amogh) (17, from Storrs, CT) to continue running online events for the rest of the summer, such as the [Fine Arts Gala](https://events.hackclub.com/arts-gala) he hosted last week. This week, community members are running the [Open Source Fiesta](https://fiesta.hackclub.com/). Lachlan made new webpages about [our Slack](https://hackclub.com/slack/), [AMAs](https://hackclub.com/amas/), [our Minecraft server](https://hackclub.com/minecraft), & worked with Amogh to relaunch [Hack Night](https://hackclub.com/night/), our weekly Saturday night Zoom coding hangout. 42 | 43 | Look at what high school students in Hack Club are building with code: 44 | 45 | * [Caleb D.](https://github.com/cjdenio/replier) (17, New Hampshire) made a [vacation responder Slack bot](https://github.com/cjdenio/replier) using Go 46 | * [Matt G.](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/matthewgleich) (17, New Hampshire) open-sourced [a new Go project](https://github.com/Matt-Gleich/desktop) & made a remarkable GitHub profile with GitHub Actions 47 | * [Ashay P.](https://ashayp.com/) (16, Chicago) won a hackathon prize for [HealthDESK](https://health-desk.herokuapp.com/), a website using AI to detect bad desk posture & habits 48 | * [Theo B.](https://tmb.sh/) (16, staff, near Boston, MA) published [a call-to-action](https://westboroughcovidplan.com/) for his high school to comment on their school district’s COVID plan 49 | * [Patrick H.](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/phultquist) (17, Illinois) used his Summer of Making hardware grant made [a physical display](https://twitter.com/hackclub/status/1288212728750968833?s=20) for the album cover of whatever music is playing nearby (& found the time to FOIA his school to [visualize his school’s grades](https://imsagrades.com/)) 50 | * [Akash](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/akash) (Kerala, India) used his [Summer of Making](https://summer.hackclub.com/) grant to make a smart electricity meter: 51 | ![Smart electricity meter](https://cloud-7600buje1.vercel.app/2020-07-30_zrvjn04tq3a3vf77aah2hj7k2aa6f3gu.png) 52 | _Smart electricity meter, Kerala, India_ 53 | 54 | **_Student snapshot: Dina’s story_** 55 | _Hi! Now, thousands of students are on our Slack, making Hack Club the largest online community of teen coders in the world, and each month we build out new programs & activities for them.   31 | 32 | This month, we’ve started the [Workshop Bounty Program](https://hackclub.com/workshop-bounty/), where student leaders submit coding workshops from their clubs for $200. We’ve had 40+ submissions so far, and we have [3 new student-authored workshops](https://workshops.hackclub.com/) live. Check out this [CSS & JavaScript workshop](https://workshops.hackclub.com/simple_clock/) on building a clock by Fayd S (15, Navi Mumbai, India). 33 | 34 | Since clubs are meeting online for COVID, we’re also gifting a Zoom Pro subscription to every Hack Club. In the last month, 6,785 students have been in Hack Club Zoom meetings for club meetings, social hangouts, coding help, and more. 35 | 36 | **What students are building** 37 | 38 | * [Sam P](https://sampoder.com/) (15, Singapore) shipped [State of Democracy](https://state-of-democracy.vercel.app/), a website shedding light on the fragile state of democracy in the world. Built in Next.js with information pulled from the Economist Intelligence Unit. 39 | * [Caleb D](https://calebdenio.me/) (17, New Hampshire) made [Uno for Slack](https://github.com/cjdenio/slack-uno), a completely working virtual implementation of the card game Uno, built in Dart & HTML/CSS, entirely inside Slack. 40 | * [Neel R ](https://neelr.dev/)(California) made [Ensio](https://ensio.live/), a creative alternative to Zoom built to be better for students and offices. New features include the ability to move across a 2D space, adjustable sound barriers, white board collaboration, and more. 41 | * [Matt G](https://github.com/Matt-Gleich) and [Caleb D](https://calebdenio.me/) (17, New Hampshire) made [Awesome Hack Club](https://github.com/hackclub/awesome-hackclub), a collection of all the cool projects shipped by Hack Clubbers. Built in Go, any ship, Scrapbook, or project posted on the Slack can be automatically added and featured on Hack Club’s GitHub. 42 | 43 | ![Student drawing on iPad Pro to thank Hack Club](https://cloud-9sg54w2os.vercel.app/2020-10-09_gffk7ga2bp4e4vxkda9qkg0ev9r0fwgv.jpeg) 44 | 45 | _We’ve continued distributing the iPad grants given by Guillermo Rauch & Mahmoud Abdelkadar this summer. It's a train trip starting in July at [Hack Club HQ](https://goo.gl/maps/jNQB5kwYoLH11JqM6) in Burlington, Vermont, heading south to New York City, west through Chicago, and crossing the Rockies on our way to San Francisco. From there, we'll follow the Pacific Ocean and end in Los Angeles, where we'll finish at SpaceX. 6 | 7 | Onboard, we're hosting the world's longest hackathon on land: 3,502 miles long. 8 | 9 | Our hope is to create a life-changing experience that will energize the next generation of Hack Club leaders right before the start of the new school year. When Hack Club works, it's because of the teenagers who build it. Every summer we invest deeply in Hack Club leaders, and The Hacker Zephyr will be our biggest investment yet. Our first invitations go out this week. 10 | 11 | ![Zephyr Sketch](https://cloud-f2yutzz0w-hack-club-bot.vercel.app/0train-valley-small.png) 12 | 13 | *Here’s a 2-minute read on how we’re building [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com)—sent to 88 recipients, including our major donors & friends. It's hosting an intranet over WiFi, and we've configured a custom DNS server and a deploy flow for both static and dynamic sites. A handful of Hack Clubbers have already mirrored crates.io, npm, and the Ubuntu Package Archive, along with adding offline copies of Stack Overflow and Wikipedia to it. We’re calling our server and intranet the ZephyrNET. 11 | 12 | As the train clacks from Burlington, Vermont to Los Angeles, we’re challenging the 42 Hack Clubbers on board to make 500 contributions to the ZephyrNET. 13 | 14 | ![Zach Latta, Zach Fogg, and Max Wofford](https://cloud-5rrvf1q8j-hack-club-bot.vercel.app/1zephyrnet.jpg) 15 | *Engineers Zach Latta, Zach Fogg and Max Wofford with the server we're taking aboard the Zephyr.* 16 | 17 | Hack Club is all about building real projects in the real world. Later tonight, Hack Clubbers are programming and conversing with Feross Aboukhadijeh of Socket. 4 | 5 | And one sign that Spring is coming and COVID is behind us is the nearly $500k that Hack Club teenagers have raised already in 2022 using Hack Club Bank, the financial tool built by and for Hack Clubbers- that's 3x what was raised this time last year. 6 | 7 | Across the US, India and 22 other countries, teenagers are learning, creating and building with code, and this is thanks to you who donate to make Hack Club possible. Here's your 2-minute read on how you're supporting incredible teenagers to build a better future for all of us. 8 | 9 | ![](https://cloud-4cym4829s-hack-club-bot.vercel.app/01649089302.png) 10 | 11 | *Hack Clubbers from India at a hackathon in Mumbai* 12 | 13 | **News at Hack Club** 14 | 15 | Special thank you to **Tom and Theresa Preston-Werner** for their [generous gift of $500,000](https://hackclub.com/preston-werner-2022/) - which is their 4th gift over 4 years to Hack Club. Reliable, early-stage and generous support like this makes Hack Club possible. 16 | 17 | Thank you to **Hack Club alum [Conrad Kramer](https://conradkramer.com/)** for donating $25k. (Yep - if you've used Shortcuts in iOS, you're using what Conrad built.) 18 | 19 | In the last few months, there have been **100+ highly technical ships** by Hack Clubbers (sample ship: [Building a Transport Protocol on ARP](https://github.com/kognise/arpchat)) and they have hosted 15+ community events and you can watch the entire [AMA with Vitalik here.](https://hackclub.com/vitalik/) Teenagers hosted a talk and live coding demonstration[](https://hackclub.com/vitalik/)about the Remix framework from [Kent Dodd](https://kentcdodds.com/), and numerous Hack Clubbers led workshops, including [Build A Custom Blockchain](https://events.hackclub.com/build-a-custom-blockchain/) hosted by Hack Clubber [@Rajan](https://www.heyrajan.com/). Hack Clubbers also presented to hundreds at Replit's recent conference. 20 | 21 | **With 21 new clubs this year**, we're focused on building learning tools like [Game Lab](https://gamelab.hackclub.com/), an easy to use online JavaScript video game editor (tested in 10 clubs so far), and forming meaningful relationships with Hack Club leaders to help them run amazing clubs! 22 | 23 | **Our team is growing:** We hired [Jessica Card](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessicard/), a senior software engineer formerly at GitHub, to deepen accessibility and education at Hack Club for all teenage hackers, especially from underrepresented groups. One of her first projects was launching [contribute.hackclub.com](http://contribute.hackclub.com/), making our organization even more hackable by teenagers. We hired [Rick Blount](https://www.linkedin.com/in/rick-j-blount-a722bb12) to lead philanthropy, after he helped raise $17.2m in Vermont for a new YMCA in downtown Burlington. And [Kara Massie](https://www.linkedin.com/in/kara-massie-551a2392)is Hack Club's new executive assistant and project manager, coming to us from lead production role at Activision. 24 | 25 | **We have more open positions:** Currently, we are looking for a senior-level Ruby on Rails engineer to join us as the [Tech Lead](https://hackclub.com/jobs/lead-hacker/)for Hack Club Bank and would appreciate introductions. 26 | 27 | **Big picture:** As we spring into April, we continue to work towards making Hack Club the most incredible learning and building community for teenagers. This includes improving the current learn-to-code pipeline by exploring [new formats](https://microworlds.hackclub.dev/) for workshops and growing our team of engineers to work directly with Hack Clubbers. 28 | 29 | **See what Hack Clubbers are building:** 30 | 31 | ![](https://cloud-avpe52dcy-hack-club-bot.vercel.app/01649089461.png) 32 | 33 | **[Sam Poder](https://sampoder.com/)**, 17, from Singapore, and Dev, 16, from Mumbai, worked with other Hack Clubbers to run [CodeDay](https://www.codeday.org/) events in their own cities! During [Mumbai's CodeDay](https://event.codeday.org/mumbai), 80% of attendees wrote code for the first time ever. 34 | 35 | **[Kognise](https://kognise.dev/)**, 15, from San Antonio, shipped[arpchat](https://github.com/kognise/arpchat)-- a chat app built on the arp protocol. The project gained 1.2k+ GitHub stars in under 2 weeks! 36 | 37 | **[Caleb Denio](https://calebden.io/)**, 17, from New Hampshire, created a Slack app for [Hack Club Bank](http://hackclub.com/bank) that allows Hack Clubbers to easily check the transactions on projects with [Transparency Mode](https://www.philanthropy.com/article/nonprofits-need-to-embrace-transparency-even-if-the-supreme-court-rules-to-protect-donor-privacy) turned on. 38 | 39 | **[Tejas Agarwal](https://tejas.dino.icu/)**, 14, from India, built [Hera](https://github.com/tejasag/hera) -- a simple programming language that is really fast! When executing a Fibonacci sequence program, Hera was 33x faster than Python. 40 | 41 | **[John Lins](https://www.johnlins.com/)**, 17, from the Bay Area, combined his passion for code with his math and physics knowledge to build [simulations](https://simulations.johnlins.com/) in the C programming language that demonstrate several math, physics, and machine learning concepts. 42 | 43 | **[Tarek](https://github.com/DGKSK8LIFE)**, 16, from Houston built [Secr](https://www.secr.dev/), an open source and free application security tool that identifies and helps developers recreate and patch vulnerabilities. 44 | 45 | **[Claire Wang](https://www.clairebookworm.com/)**, 17, from Boston, created [MidiLab](https://midilab.netlify.app/), a music visualiser inspired by Vaporwave design with [Three.js](https://threejs.org/). Earlier this month, Hack Club's [Assemble](https://assemble.hackclub.com/) in San Francisco had 600 registrants for 42 hours of nonstop building. 40% were girls and nonbinary. 9 | 10 | Hack Club is now collaborating with FIRST® Robotics to bring software engineering to tens of thousands of technical high school students in 100 different countries enrolled in their robotics competitions. Together, we’re encouraging teenagers to start hackathons in their community by offering [$500 grants and free services](https://hackclub.com/hackathons/) on Hack Club Bank this fall. 11 | 12 | With all the new attention generating interest in clubs, we just launched a new 2-minute clubs [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sxRdKtKNa0) with Hack Clubbers sharing the magic. 13 | 14 | ...and now we’re going to turn the newsletter over to Ishan Goel, a 17-year-old Hack Clubber who recently completed an internship here at HQ. Thanks for this time together.* 12 | 13 | Across the organization, 2022 is projected to be [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com/)'s most impactful year ever– with more teenagers coding, launching clubs, making friends and gaining financial and leadership skills. We're scaling even as our budget remains steady. 14 | 15 | Special thanks to: 16 | - Sal Khan for spending an hour in an AMA that will be hosted by Hack Clubbers on Oct 28th 17 | - Craig Newmark, Endless Network (Ray Dalio), Joe Lonsdale and Argosy Foundation for having made significant gifts this year to Hack Club 18 | - Dean Kamen and John Abele, founders of FIRST Robotics, for personally supporting a major new engineering partnership between FIRST Robotics and Hack Club 19 | - Tarika Barrett, CEO of Girls Who Code, for working with Christina to support 10 high school girls attend Hack Club's summer hackathon 20 | 21 | ### Three accomplishments your support made possible: 22 | 23 | *More friendships created around a shared interest:* 24 | Hack Club hosted the first major high school hackathon in person since 2020. Nearly 200 teenagers attended for 3 days! Check out this short video. Since August, 25 more teenagers have started organizing hackathons that will reach thousands of students nationwide. 25 | 26 | *More teenagers learning to spend, manage and raise $$$:* 27 | At Hack Club Bank revenue is on track to triple in 2022. Hack Club is now the largest fiscal sponsor of teenager-led organizations in the US. 28 | 29 | *More teenagers coding, together:* 30 | This fall, 194 teenagers applied to start a Hack Club, and we’ve also had record applications worldwide, including from Serbia, Austria, England, Sweden, Belarus, France and Spain. 31 | 32 | ![](https://postal.hackclub.com/uploads/1666291934.png) 33 | 34 | Meet Ivoine, 17, from the Bahamas (recipient of a Ron Conway grant). 35 | 36 | *A few examples of what Hack Clubbers are building:* 37 | 38 | - Aadit, 16, from Redmond, WA created [Teardrop](https://teardrop.vercel.app/), a message encoder that uses emoji obfuscation; his aim was to stop his school from reading his emails. 39 | - Abby, 16, from Los Angeles, CA built a serverless function that pulls from the Bank API to email a daily overview of transactions in Hack Club Bank. 40 | - Utilizing both the Notion and Google Classroom API, Hack Clubber Neesh, 16, from Middlebury, CT, shipped a [program](https://github.com/Neesh774/Scholar) that takes google classroom assignments and formats them into his notion calendar! 41 | Hack Clubbers are using [StarItAllWeb](https://github.com/KaiDevrim/StarItAllWeb) by Kai, 17, from San Jose, CA, which stars every project from a user or organization on GitHub in just one click. 42 | Cara, 19, from Worcester worked with other Hack Clubbers to ship a [word calculator](https://wordcalc.dino.icu/) built at our summer hackathon, Assemble (apparently HC+SUPPORTERS = MPD?) 43 | Thank you for making Hack Club possible! If you're interested in seeing more Hack Clubber projects, below is a newsletter written October 1st by Sam, 17, to Hack Clubbers around the world. 44 | 45 | — Christina Asquith, cofounder of Hack Club 46 | 47 | --- 48 | 49 | # 🎒 🍃 ✨ What the hack happened this month at Hack Club? 50 | 51 | Hey friends! 52 | 53 | [Sam](https://github.com/sampoder), Hack Clubber from Singapore, here. The last few weeks have been pretty busy at Hack Club, and this is a rundown of what your fellow Hack Clubbers have been up to lately. 54 | 55 | To start, last week, we shared **[🎬 The Assemble Documentary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnK4gzO6S3Q)**: a film on Assemble to help answer the question _"what is a hackathon?"_. It showcases the magical experience of attending a hackathon, and our hope is that it can help organisers share what’s in store for attendees at their hackathons. 56 | 57 | 58 | 59 | 60 | 61 | _(FYI: you're receiving this email because you're in [the Hack Club Slack](https://hackclub.com/slack).)_ 62 | 63 | ## 🎒 Hacking The Back To School 64 | 65 | Incredible Hack Club meetings are happening in schools across the world this month, like [Linkai](https://linkaiwu.com/) and [Tinu](https://tinu.tech/) had more than a dozen friends at their club in Silver Spring, Maryland this month. 66 | 67 | 68 | 69 | My club in Singapore meets Monday’s during lunch, and in October we’ll be doing -- @sam what will y'all be doing? 70 | 71 | To prepare for the new school year, clubs have been busy shipping new websites to pitch their club to prospective members. Here are a couple of my favourites: 72 | 73 | Screenshot 2022-09-24 at 10 25 19 PM 74 | 75 | [CCHS Hack Club (Chicopee, MA)](https://cchshackclub.hackclub.com) - website built by [Jianmin](https://www.jianminchen.com/)! That Julia Fractal (the generative art on the right) is stunning 🤩. We have [a workshop](https://workshops.hackclub.com/julia_fractals/) that you can use to make a similar piece, if you're curious. [Jianmin](https://www.jianminchen.com/) has open sourced [her approach here](https://github.com/cchshackclub/website/blob/main/index.js), it's a super interesting piece of code to read! 76 | 77 | Screenshot 2022-09-24 at 10 14 17 PM 78 | 79 | [Edison Hack Club (Queens, NY)](https://edisonhack.club) - website built by [Kyle](https://kyleliao.tech/)! He hacked it together just in time for the school year. Interestingly, their logo was generated using DALL-E. I agree with [Celeste](https://celeste.exposed/), who commented _"i like that — afaict — one of the first things i see upon opening the site is members’ projects"_ in response to the #ship, that's awesome! 80 | 81 | Screenshot 2022-09-24 at 10 21 24 PM 82 | 83 | [Pomperaug Hack Club (Southbury, CT)](https://pomperaug.hackclub.com) - website built by [Neesh](https://neesh.ilioslabs.dev/)! I really love how they've used the ["Welcome to Hack Club" video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sxRdKtKNa0) on there. Their site also has just the right amount of sarcasm, nice one [Neesh](https://neesh.ilioslabs.dev/). 84 | 85 | If you've built a website for your club (or just built anything in general!) recently, you should [#ship](https://hackclub.slack.com/archives/C0M8PUPU6) it on [Slack](https://hackclub.com/slack). It's always so much fun seeing what fellow Hack Clubbers have made! 86 | 87 | ## 🍃 Sprig Takes Off 88 | 89 | The big news of the month from HQ was the release of [Sprig](https://sprig.hackclub.com), a handheld gaming console where every player is a creator! In total, :sparkles: _**430 consoles**_ :sparkles: are going to be manufactured & shipped out to Hack Clubbers who make games. 90 | 91 | 92 | 93 | Any teenager can get a console by: 94 | > :video_game: Building a Sprig game in [the online JavaScript game editor](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com). 95 | > 96 | > 🔀 Making a pull request to add your game to the Sprig gallery in [the GitHub repository](https://github.com/hackclub/sprig) 97 | 98 | It's been so special seeing the Hack Club community banding together to create games. On our recent Sprig Jam, I tried my hand at building my own game called [The Reactor](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/?file=https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/sprig/main/games/reactor.js). Everyone in [#sprig](https://hackclub.slack.com/archives/C02UN35M7LG) was so wonderfully kind & helpful as I made my way through the process. 99 | 100 | The games that everyone's been shipping & submitting are incredible; here are some of my favourites from [the Gallery](https://sprig.hackclub.com/gallery): 101 | 102 | | | | | 103 | |---|---|---| 104 | | [![sprig hackclub com_gallery](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/39828164/192105424-51eb7598-8793-4721-9c1b-bee17c89d829.png)](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/?file=https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/sprig/main/games/kindless.js) | [![sprig hackclub com_gallery (10)](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/39828164/192105727-f4e28900-c675-4706-9b83-a340b7a1bf17.png)](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/?file=https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/sprig/main/games/raycasting.js) | [![sprig hackclub com_gallery (7)](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/39828164/192105645-3f8f2803-6008-4d9c-bf0f-33ed4ab28a54.png)](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/?file=https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/sprig/main/games/nomis.js)| 105 | | [![sprig hackclub com_gallery (9)](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/39828164/192105672-146a60a1-e36c-46b7-afd5-46a5ce407d8d.png)](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/?file=https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/sprig/main/games/friendship.js) | [![sprig hackclub com_gallery (4)](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/39828164/192105553-cc3850ad-4a03-409c-b08a-483729520357.png)](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/?file=https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/sprig/main/games/minesweeper.js) | [![sprig hackclub com_gallery (5)](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/39828164/192105556-f98f5b41-48d1-4a14-ae94-712845abc7f1.png)](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/?file=https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hackclub/sprig/main/games/multiplayer_soccer.js)| 106 | 107 | Sprigs are going to start shipping in October; I'm looking forward to receiving mine, assembling it & playing these games on the console! In the meantime, I've heard whispers of seeds coming in the mail 👀 108 | 109 | ## ✨ The Return of IRL Hackathons 110 | 111 | What excites me the most in Hack Club right now is the return of IRL [high-school hackathons](https://hackclub.com/hackathons)! Hackathons are a big part of how I got into programming and seeing them return in-person is incredible. Last week, for example, [Maggie](https://maggieliu.dev/) hosted Leland Hacks: 112 | 113 | 114 | 115 | _( [Maggie](https://maggieliu.dev/) made some of [the most incredible swag designs](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/maggie) for Leland Hacks! No wonder everyone's swarming the swag table.)_ 116 | 117 | And over the next semester, there's many more high school hackathons in stall across the globe: 118 | 119 | - [Sego Lily Hacks](https://www.segolilyhacks.com/) ~ October 7–8 in Salt Lake City, UT 120 | - [Hack Austin!](https://hackaustin.net/) ~ October 16 in Austin, TX 121 | - [Unite Hacks](https://www.unitehacks.com/) ~ October 22 in Oakland, CA 122 | - [Tri-Valley Hacks](https://www.trivalleyhacks.org/) ~ October 29–30 in Pleasanton, CA 123 | - [Hack Orlando](https://hackorlando.org/) ~ October 29 in Orlando, FL 124 | - [poolesville_hacks 2](https://poolesvillehacks.tech/) ~ November 18-20 in Poolesville, MD 125 | - [Lion City Hacks](https://lioncityhacks.com/) ~ December 3 in Singapore 126 | - [HackOC](https://hackoc.org/) ~ Date TBD in Orange County, CA 127 | 128 | We keep a directory of upcoming high school hackathons at [hackathons.hackclub.com](https://hackathons.hackclub.com); strongly recommend it! 129 | 130 | It's been amazing seeing Hack Clubbers working together in [#hackathon-organizers](https://hackclub.slack.com/archives/C03QSGGCJN7) to create all these magical hackathons. In that Slack channel we talk about raising money, prizes, food, swag & more! As someone organising my own hackathon, it means a lot to have a group of friends there to help me along the way. 131 | 132 | [Theo](https://tmb.sh/), a Hack Club alum whose cold emailing made the [Elon Musk AMA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riru9OzScwk) possible, has been kindly helping edit sponsor's pitches: 133 | 134 | Screenshot 2022-09-24 at 10 41 46 PM 135 | 136 | 137 | Once again, I hope you'll check out **[🎬 The Assemble Documentary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnK4gzO6S3Q)**: a film on Assemble to help answer the question _"what is a hackathon?"_. It showcases the magical experience of attending a hackathon, and our hope is that it can help organisers share what’s in store for attendees at their hackathons. 138 | 139 | 140 | 141 | 142 | 143 | So that's what's been happening this month! Looking to escape school & get more involved? Here a couple of great ways to get more involved in the community at the moment: 144 | 145 | - 👋 Join a [Hack Night](https://hackclub.com/night/) call! Every Saturday evening (in America, for me its Sunday morning!), we all jump on a Zoom call to hang out and code together. 146 | 147 | - 🌈 Organise a hackathon using [Hack Club Bank](https://hackclub.com/bank), with the help of fellow organisers in [#hackathon-organizers](https://hackclub.slack.com/archives/C03QSGGCJN7) and with one of [our $500 high-school hackathon grants](https://hackclub.com/hackathons/grant). 148 | 149 | - 🎒 Bring together a group of friends & bring the hack to your school by starting a club: https://apply.hackclub.com! 150 | 151 | - 🍃 Procrastinate by playing games in the [Sprig Gallery](https://sprig.hackclub.com/gallery), or, even better, "productively procrastinate" by [making a Sprig game](https://editor.sprig.hackclub.com/). 152 | 153 | - 🔥 Start a streak on [Scrapbook](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com). (Personally, I've just started posting about learning Redwood [on mine](https://scrapbook.hackclub.com/sampoder)!) 154 | 155 | Thanks for taking the time to read this email! I'll leave you with this teaser from [Ramiz](https://philonoist.co/) & [Mark](https://hackclub.slack.com/team/U03Q20XM953) in [#amas](https://hackclub.slack.com/archives/C03QPB0SU3V). (Keep your eye on Slack for more info in the coming weeks!) 156 | 157 | Screenshot 2022-09-24 at 11 47 40 AM 158 | 159 | _Over & out,_ 160 | Sam 161 | 162 | (like in all Hack Club emails, we respect your privacy and don't track whether you open this email or click links in it. if you'd like to unsubscribe, click here) 163 | 164 | PS: check out some of this incredible art using [Stable Diffusion](https://stability.ai/blog/stable-diffusion-announcement)! [Celeste](https://celeste.exposed/) shipped [github.com/hackclub/simple-stable-diffusion](https://github.com/hackclub/simple-stable-diffusion) to help folks in the community get started with Stable Diffusion, it's a Colab notebook for getting Stable Diffusion running in <10 minutes. 165 | | | | | 166 | |---|---|---| 167 | | | | | 168 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /027/README.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | Dear Hack Club friends, 2 | 3 | Teenagers often say Hack Club changes their lives. We are looking to invite a few female role models for the dinner. Please send us suggestions! 13 | 14 | *Special thanks to:* 15 | 16 | **David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails, [for spending an hour Saturday morning talking to Hack Club teenagers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVWtWwBydB8&themeRefresh=1) 17 | 18 | **Ron Conway, Lizzy Danhakl and Andrew Reed, and Craig Newmark for making a gift to support Hack Club in December 19 | 20 | *What Hack Clubbers have been up to:* 21 | 22 | Hack Club’s mission is to inspire a new generation of teen engineers to build and solve problems with code. 23 | 24 | Since fall, the number of teenagers active in our online community has doubled and teenagers have started 126 new clubs, reaching an estimated 2000 high schoolers. In 2022, with your help, we raised another [$3.2m](https://bank.hackclub.com/hq) for 2023 and we grew our team of engineers and teen coders from 9 to nearly 20, allowing us to support more teenagers with our programs. 25 | 26 | And Hack Club Bank keeps growing as a critical tool for teen leaders to raise and spend money on their projects. Get this: more than $7 million has been transacted on Hack Club Bank in total – and in 2022 we brought 287 new organizations, double the number of new orgs in 2021. 27 | 28 | Thanks to you, new teenagers joining Hack Club find life-changing opportunities to gain technical skills, improve their community and inspire others to do the same. 29 | 30 | *Three things we're excited about right now:* 31 | *1. Live events* 32 | On Dec 30, Hack Club teenagers in India organized and attended a [3 day hackathon in New Delhi,]https://epoch.hackclub.com in which 50 technical projects were built and shared. In partnership with Indian nonprofit, ATAL, many attendees travelled from rural areas of India, including many girls. 33 | 34 | ![](https://cloud-issl87d62-hack-club-bot.vercel.app/0bmc_1823.jpg) 35 | 36 | Srijit, a first time hackathon attendee, shares “honestly it was the best new year of my life… my experience was beyond expectations.” 37 | 38 | 39 | ![](https://cloud-ht7oennd7-hack-club-bot.vercel.app/0screen_shot_2023-02-07_at_10.28.06_pm.png) 40 | 41 | *2. Partnerships* 42 | 43 | We’re now collaborating with FIRST, GitHub Education and Girl Scouts STEM to support coding education. In December, we launched a collaboration with FIRST, which serves 538,000 students in America and worldwide. 44 | 45 | We’re working directly with FIRST’s leadership team to solve 2 problems for teenagers. We built a fiscal sponsor / financial platform at Hack Club Bank that is best in class, solves major operational challenges for teams, and being used by parents, teachers and teenagers running FIRST teams to manage money for their robotics clubs. More importantly, we are working with FIRST to design ways to support teenagers in FIRST to develop skills in software engineering, including a massive, collaborative online puzzle with dozens of steps that nearly 1,000 teenagers are currently trying to solve together. 46 | 47 | As of today, 34 robotics teams in FIRST are currently running or getting started on Hack Club Bank. 48 | 49 | *3. Grants* 50 | 51 | **We launched the [Winter Hardware Wonderland](https://hackclub.com/winter/), in which we distributed $250 electronics project grants to 200 teenagers in 20+ countries including Cameroon, Spain, and Ukraine 52 | **Supporting 20+ high school hackathons — reaching thousands of students — across the US and around the world with a total of $12k in grants 53 | 54 | **Travel stipends totalling $17k to teenagers to attend our 3 day hackathon in New Delhi, India 55 | 56 | **Distributing laptops to teenagers in need so they can further their coding journey 57 | 58 | Hack Club Bank can direct grants to teenagers in need, within minutes. Major, major individuals (>$250K) 8 | 2. Major individuals (>$10K) 9 | 3. Corporations (as I'm writing this, GitHub is our only current corporate supporter) 10 | 11 | The hope is that we'll publish our VIP updates with approximately a 6 week delay between being first sent out and going open source on GitHub, so our largest supporters get the updates first. If it feels right, we'll remove that delay in the future. 12 | 13 | VIP newsletters are written by Christina with final edits from me. We aim to send out approximately every month. 14 | 15 | \- Zach 16 | 17 | 24 | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
