We license Afterlogic Pro (for our non-reseller servers, reseller servers coming soon) which does have CalDAV Calendar functionality but at the core we’re not selling “groupware.” We’re selling email. We’d like to decouple the two from people’s brains. Yes Gsuite and Office 365 include calendars. That’s because they’re selling groupware. We’re selling email. We’re not primarily interested in managing calendars. The opinion here is that you can successfully decouple calendars from your email and use any application you like, and if it isn’t tied to your email then your calendar suddenly becomes portable, modular. That’s pretty ideal, we think. But if you really want it to be stored with us, that’s part of the reason we license Afterlogic Pro. Just know, that’s not where the bulk of our time and energy is going.

E-mail is rotated randomly between those IPs and, if an e-mail fails for a reason that we think might be related to IP reputation, it is retried from different IPs several times. If the e-mail still fails, it goes to Laststand. Laststand houses 253 IPs used for e-mail delivery. If e-mail fails delivery several times from different IPs on Laststand, it forwards to SpamWall. SpamWall will attempt delivery from different IPs for up to 3 days before bouncing the e-mail back to the sender.

That’s because our servers attempt local delivery first, for domains that are hosted on each server. If the domain exists on that server, it attempts to send locally. If the recipient doesn’t exist locally, it fails.

5 | Now, some people bring up “app-specific passwords” for POP/IMAP/SMTP as a solution. From a security perspective, it isn’t a solution. There are potential convenience gains but they’re mostly mitigated by the actual reality of what a compromised password looks like. App-specific passwords is the “sleight of hand” I’m referring to above. They’re plain passwords used to log in and bypass 2FA, which renders 2FA invalid on the account. While many offer this, no one tracks them, and they can’t be limited to just the app (because, again, the protocols don’t work this way). So if your account gets compromised and you have 50 passwords, what do you do besides delete all 50 passwords and start over? Delete them one at a time and see how long it takes for spam to stop going out from your account? Reduce server security and log which password is being used (because that’s the only way to gain that insight from the universal protocols)?
