It's written in JavaScript, so it's easy to run on Mac, Windows and Linux. However, this set of technologies doesn't translate easily to mobile. Nylas Mail for iOS or Android would need to be an entirely separate companion product designed for those operating systems and form factors. 4 | 5 | We may ship Nylas Mail for iOS and Android in the future, but we're currently focused on shipping a best-in-class desktop product. You don’t need to upgrade to a paid plan, and the app will not run in trial mode. When you send an email with open tracking enabled, we add a 1 square pixel (1px by 1px) image to the end of your email. When the recipient opens the email, the image is loaded, and that involves a request to our servers. This request allows us to deduce that the email has been opened. The only information we receive is that which is normally associated with a web request, plus any information that we attached to the image source URL (such as the message ID). This only works when the image is loaded however, so recipients who are concerned about their privacy can configure their mail client to not automatically load images when they open an email. 4 | 5 | 6 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /HOW_TO_GENERATE_DOCS.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | ## Building the docs 2 | 3 | Plugin SDK docs are available at [https://nylas.github.io/nylas-mail/](https://nylas.github.io/nylas-mail/). After moving messages to your Trash or Deleted Items folder, you'll need to use another application, or your email provider's webmail interface, to delete them permanently. 4 | 5 | We're working to fix this. You can follow the discussion on GitHub issues here:  6 | [https://github.com/nylas/N1/issues/599](https://github.com/nylas/N1/issues/599) 7 | 8 | Keep in mind that many mail providers (Gmail, Outlook 365, and so on), will schedule mail in the Trash or Deleted Messages folders to be permanently deleted after 30 days, so no further action is necessary unless you want the message to be destroyed immediately. 9 | 10 | 11 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /getting_started/220979348-creating-signatures.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Creating signatures 2 | 3 | To manage your signatures, go to Preferences > Signatures. 4 | 5 | You can type a signature using the standard text editor (with bold, underline, links, and so on), or switch to "Raw HTML" mode and paste a signature from another application. 6 | 7 | ![](./208501727-signature.gif) 8 | 9 | Currently N1 supports a single signature for each account. For more details about our security and privacy policies, head over to [nylas.com/security](https://nylas.com/security).  8 | 9 | If you discover a security vulnerability or would like to contact us on other security-related matters, please write to [security@nylas.com](mailto:%20security@nylas.com). 10 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /account_basics/115001158188-authorizing-use-with-outlookcom-hotmailcom-or-livecom.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Authorizing use with Outlook.com, hotmail.com, or live.com 2 | 3 | To add your Outlook.com, hotmail.com, or live.com email address to Nylas Mail, please select the Office 365 option from 'Add Account' and enter in your email address and password for your account. 4 | 5 | If your account is configured for two factor authorization then you will need to generate an [app specific password](https://support.nylas.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001056608-App-Passwords). 6 | 7 | In some cases, Microsoft will tell Nylas Mail that you entered an incorrect password even though it was correct. If you entered in your email address and password correctly, you may need to do the following steps: 8 | 9 | 1. Go to Outlook.com and you should see a notification from Microsoft called "Microsoft account unusual sign-in activity".   10 | 2. Click the button to [Review Recent Activity](https://account.live.com/activity) in that notification email. 11 | 3. On that page, you'll see a button that says "This was me" - click that button. 12 | 4. Go back to Nylas Mail and re-enter your email address and password. 13 | 5. Nylas Mail should now be able to load your account. 14 | 15 | 16 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /account_basics/216123467-setting-the-spell-check-language.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Setting the spell check language 2 | 3 | N1 uses the electron-spellchecker module for spell check: https://www.npmjs.com/package/electron-spellchecker  This is neat because it automatically detects the language you're writing in and spellchecks in that language.  If you reply in multiple languages, it will even only spell check certain phrases in the correct language!  On Linux and older versions of Windows, it downloads Hunspell dictionaries on-the-fly, because shipping them all would be costly.  If your N1 doesn't detect the language that you're typing in, please write a draft in the language of your choice and allow N1 to try to download the language in the background.  4 | 5 | On Mac OS X and Windows 10, N1 will default to your operating system language for spell checking your drafts. To change your spellchecking language, you'll need to change your system language. 6 | 7 | On Linux and older versions of Windows, N1 will spell check in English when your system language is English. System dictionaries are not available for other languages, and N1 will not perform spell check if your system language is not English. We're working to expand spell check support for other languages on Linux and Windows, and you can follow the discussion here: https://github.com/nylas/N1/issues/1392 8 | 9 | 10 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /misc/219130788-how-do-i-increase-the-font-size-in-nylas-mail.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # How do I increase the font size in Nylas Mail? 2 | 3 | Nylas Mail doesn't officially support changing the font size. However, for some displays and Linux machines, it's necessary to increase the scale of the UI to make Nylas Mail more usable. 4 | 5 | You can scale up the entire interface of Nylas Mail by opening your config file at ~/.nylas/config.json, and adding a value greater than 1 for `core.workspace.interfaceZoom` (1.2 = 120%, 1.4 = 140%, etc.), like this:   6 | 7 | { 8 | 9 |   "*": { 10 | 11 |     "env": "production", 12 | 13 |     "core": { 14 | 15 |       "workspace": { 16 | 17 |           "interfaceZoom": 1.2 18 | 19 |       }, 20 | 21 |       "themes": [ 22 | 23 |         "ui-light" 24 | 25 |       ], 26 | 27 |       ..... 28 | 29 | You can also do a global search and replace for .snippet-and-labels .snippet and make it .snippet-and-labels .snippet {\n font-size: 16px;... 30 | 31 | That's because I noticed one of the tags I needed to change was "snippet" or "snippet-and-labels". This changed all the compile-cache files.  32 | 33 | In thread.less you can also make this change: 34 | 35 | .participants, 36 | .timestamp { 37 | font-size: 16px; 38 | } 39 | .subject { 40 | color: [#000000](/agent/tickets/000000); 41 | font-size: 16px; 42 | 43 | 44 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /subscriptions/220976348-how-much-do-the-nylas-cloud-apis-cost.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # How much do the Nylas Cloud APIs cost? 2 | 3 | You can start building using the Nylas Cloud APIs immediately! We don't require a credit card to try out our platform. Get started by browsing our extensive [documentation](https://www.nylas.com/docs). 4 | 5 | API pricing is per-account-per-month, and tiered by volume. You can save 15% by paying annually in advance. We structure it this way so you can feel comfortable getting started quickly, then scale up with the knowledge that you are only paying for what you use. This structure also gives you better value for every account you add. Contact [sales@nylas.com](mailto:sales@nylas.com) to get a customized quote for your company. 6 | 7 | Each email address you sync through Nylas is considered one account. For example, if you have 10 users with one connected mailbox each, that would be 10 accounts. Similarly, one user with 10 connected mailbox would also be 10 accounts. Each account includes all Nylas APIs—email, calendars, and contacts. 8 | 9 | If you exceed the volume specified in your pricing agreement, we do not automatically stop syncing accounts or throttle service in any way. Exceeding your plan will result in either a prorated overage charge based on your plan's current cost per account or an automatic plan upgrade—whichever is less expensive for you. 10 | 11 | 12 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /nylas_pro/220979428-using-mail-merge-to-send-customized-mass-emails.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Using mail merge to send customized mass emails 2 | 3 | Mail merge lets you create a message template, then automatically fill in variables to make each message personal. 4 | 5 | Follow these steps: 6 | 7 | 1. **Compose the message** you’d like to send, either by writing it directly in the text editor or by choosing an existing template. 8 | 9 | 2. **Click the Mass Email icon.** A table will appear below your message. This is where you add the content that will be inserted into your message when it’s sent. 10 | 11 | All mail merge messages must use email as one variable; this is the list of addresses to which your message will be sent. To add more variables, click the “+” on the right and a new column will appear. Add the name of the each variable in the top row. 12 | 13 | 3. **Populate the variables table**, either directly (just click on each cell and type) or by importing a CSV file. 14 | 15 | 4. **Drag and drop your variables into place** where you want them to appear within the message. 16 | 17 | You can preview how the message will look for each recipient by clicking the rows in the table. 18 | 19 | In order to respect the limits of the majority of email providers, Nylas will allow you to send mail merge messages to up to 150 recipients at a time. 20 | 21 | ![](./208567987-merge.gif)  22 | 23 | 24 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /the_nylas_salesforce_plugin/228100988-how-we-find-existing-contact-objects.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # How we find existing Contact objects 2 | 3 | When you load an email in Nylas N1, we look at all of the participants of that email. This is every email in the from, to, and cc sections. We then ask Salesforce if there are any matching Leads or Contacts for each of those emails. 4 | 5 | If we do not find a match, we prompt you to create a Lead or a Contact. 6 | 7 | If we find one match, we display the name and the corresponding Lead or Contact icon. 8 | 9 | It is possible to find more than one match. This happens if your Salesforce environment has duplicate records for a particular email. If you have duplication alerting turned on in your Salesforce environment, this should rarely happen. If it does, you may delete the duplicate record through the Nylas Salesforce plugin by clicking on the record then clicking “Delete this Lead or Contact”. 10 | 11 | We do NOT lookup Leads or Contacts for any email address that you have connected to Nylas, nor any email address with the same non-common domain as any of your email addresses. For example, if I have “evan@nylas.com” and “evan@gmail.com” connected to Nylas, we will not load Contacts for “evan@gmail.com”, “evan@nylas.com”, “ben@nylas.com”, “joe@nylas.com”, “etc@nylas.com”.  However, we will search for Contacts using @gmail.com or other common email providers. 12 | 13 | 14 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /account_basics/216108867-security-and-privacy.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Security and privacy 2 | 3 | Security and privacy are extremely important to us. You can learn about all the ways we protect and secure data here, as well as request a whitepaper that describes our security architecture in detail. 4 | 5 | N1 supports two-factor authentication out of the box for Gmail and Google apps accounts, but not other types of accounts. However, you can still use it with other email accounts that are two-factor authentication enabled. The key is that you'll need to create an "app password" to connect your account to N1. 6 | 7 | Here's how to do it for some major email providers. 8 | 9 | iCloud 10 | 11 | 1. Go to [https://appleid.apple.com/](https://appleid.apple.com/) 12 | 2. Click "Security," then "Edit." Create an app password. This is the password you should use with N1. 13 | 3. In N1, connect an iCloud account and use this password instead of your regular password when prompted. 14 | 15 | Office365 16 | 17 | 1. Visit [https://account.activedirectory.windowsazure.com/AppPasswords.aspx](https://account.activedirectory.windowsazure.com/AppPasswords.aspx) and log in to your account if prompted. 18 | 2. Click "create" to create a new app password. 19 | 3. Type "Nylas N1" in the box for the password name. Click "Next." 20 | 4. Click "Copy password to clipboard." 21 | 5. In N1, connect an Exchange account and use this password instead of your regular password when prompted. 22 | 23 | 24 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /troubleshooting/223790028-im-getting-a-password-management-error.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # I'm getting a Password Management Error 2 | 3 | Here at Nylas, we take security very seriously. That's why we store your Nylas ID password in your computer's keyring -- a database that encrypts your passwords on disk using your system's login password. 4 | 5 | **Why am I getting a Password Management Error?** 6 | 7 | If you are getting a Password Management Error, it's because something went wrong when we tried to access your computer's keyring. This could mean that you don't have a keyring installed on your computer, or you are using N1 from a user account that doesn't have permission to access the keyring. Make sure that you aren't on a "guest" user account or any user account without a password. 8 | 9 | 10 | **I'm not on a guest account, but I'm running on Linux** 11 | 12 | If you are getting this error on Linux, and aren't on a guest account, it's likely that you don't have the proper keyring installed. Run `sudo apt-get install libgnome-keyring-dev` to make sure that you do. (Or `sudo yum install libgnome-keyring-devel` if you are using a Red Hat system.) 13 | 14 | **I'm on Windows and I have a LOT of accounts** 15 | 16 | Windows has sever restrictions on the amount of data we can securely store. Since we store secure data for each email account you have, we've found once you link more than a dozen or so email accounts, we can approach the limit of the Windows password manager. 17 | 18 | **Thanks, but I'm still getting the error** 19 | 20 | If you still need help, we recommend you [contact support](mailto:support@nylas.com) with a detailed description of the issue you are experiencing. 21 | 22 | 23 | 24 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /account_basics/218222257-using-and-customizing-keyboard-shortcuts.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Using and customizing keyboard shortcuts 2 | 3 | N1 comes pre-loaded with several common keyboard shortcut configurations. Go to Preferences > Shortcuts to change the set it uses. 4 | 5 | ![](./208505067-keyboard_shortcuts.png) 6 | 7 | If you want even more specific control over your keyboard shortcuts, you can edit a file that will override any defaults. 8 | 9 | On Mac and Linux, edit the file at: "~/.nylas/keymap.json" 10 | 11 | On Windows the file should be at: "C:\Users\Your Name\.nylas\keymap.json". The ".nylas" folder is hidden and you may need to go to View > Hidden Items. 12 | 13 | If the file doesn't exist, simply make one called "keymap.json" in the ".nylas" folder. 14 | 15 | You can then enter a mapping between a sequence of keys and an action to take. See the following two examples for the exact syntax to use and the available commands: 16 | 17 | 1. Here are all of the default keymaps used in N1: [https://github.com/nylas/N1/blob/master/keymaps/base.json](https://github.com/nylas/N1/blob/master/keymaps/base.json) 18 | 19 | 2. Here are more keymaps for those that have Gmail-style keymaps enabled: [https://github.com/nylas/N1/blob/master/keymaps/templates/Gmail.json](https://github.com/nylas/N1/blob/master/keymaps/templates/Gmail.json) 20 | 21 | Any entries you add to your own "~/.nylas/keymap.json" file will override the defaults. Use the same syntax as the two example files above. The list of available actions can be found in the example files. 22 | 23 | Take careful note that in the examples, keyboard shortcuts are scoped under "body:" or "'body *[contenteditable].contenteditable':". You must also scope your custom keyboard shortcuts under the appropriate heading (see examples). 24 | 25 | 26 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /account_basics/216119307-customizing-nylas-mail.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Customizing Nylas Mail 2 | 3 | Nylas Mail is designed from the ground up to be customized and extended. There are several ways you can do this: 4 | 5 | Install plugins 6 | 7 | Plugins add new functionality to Nylas Mail. You can [activate](/hc/en-us/articles/221043467-Activating-plugins) or deactivate them at any time. More than a dozen plugins are built in directly to Nylas Mail. Go to Preferences > Plugins to see a list of what’s available, then toggle to install. 8 | 9 | Developers can clone or download additional Nylas Mail plugins via [GitHub](https://github.com/nylas/n1#plugin-list). Many of these plugins are community-contributed, and the selection will continue to grow over time. 10 | 11 | Install custom themes 12 | 13 | The design of Nylas Mail is customizable. Choose from several prebuilt [themes](/hc/en-us/articles/217557858-How-do-I-change-my-theme-) in Preferences > Appearance, or download and install new themes [here](https://github.com/nylas/n1). And if you’re familiar with CSS, you can create your own! 14 | 15 | Adjust your preferences 16 | 17 | From the standard Preferences panel, you can change settings like the display mode, how unread counts are shown, notification settings, sounds, and many others. 18 | 19 | Write your own plugin 20 | 21 | Nylas Mail is designed to make it easy for developers who are familiar with modern web technology to quickly and easily build plugins of their own. Take a look at the [Nylas Mail Github project documentation](https://github.com/nylas/nylas-mail) for guides on how to get started. 22 | 23 | Contribute to Nylas Mail Core 24 | 25 | Nylas Mail is an [open source project](https://www.github.com/nylas/n1). We welcome and encourage developers to submit pull requests. 26 | 27 | 28 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /getting_started/220979128-nylas-mail-quick-start-guide.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Nylas Mail Quick Start Guide 2 | 3 | Welcome to Nylas Mail! Here’s how to get started.  4 | 5 | **Set up an email account** 6 | 7 | First, go to Preferences > Accounts to set up your email. You can [set up multiple accounts](/hc/en-us/articles/221043647-Setting-up-multiple-accounts) from [multiple email providers](/hc/en-us/articles/221043627-Supported-email-providers). 8 | 9 | ![](./208406888-quick_start_-_add_accounts.gif) 10 | 11 | When you set up an account, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to build a complete cache of your mailbox. However, Nylas Mail is designed to pull recent messages first, so you should be able to get going quickly. Total sync time will be dependent on factors like total number of messages, your network bandwidth, processing power, and your email provider's throttling. 12 | 13 | **Customize your inbox view** 14 | 15 | You can customize your inbox experience in a variety of ways: 16 | 17 | * Configure your notifications and reading/sending settings at Preferences > General 18 | * Choose a single panel (Gmail style) or two panel (Outlook style) layout 19 | * Choose a theme (or create your own!) 20 | * Configure your keyboard shortcuts 21 | * [Activate plugins](/hc/en-us/articles/221043467-Activating-plugins) that add functionality 22 | 23 | **Explore advanced features** 24 | 25 | Nylas Mail includes several powerful capabilities to help you manage your email: 26 | 27 | * [**Swipe left to snooze**](/hc/en-us/articles/221042927-Snoozing-messages) so you can revisit messages later—on your own schedule 28 | * [**Enriched contact profiles**](/hc/en-us/articles/220979168-Viewing-enriched-contact-information-and-message-history) so you can see links to social profiles, location info, and your message history with each person on a message thread 29 | * Open and click tracking so you can see when recipients engage with your messages 30 | * [**Quick replies templates**](/hc/en-us/articles/221043107-Using-quick-reply-templates) that save you time when sending common messages 31 | 32 | 33 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /getting_started/229277648-choose-nylas-mail-as-the-default-mail-client-on-windows.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Choose Nylas Mail as the default mail client on Windows 2 | 3 | _[Important Note: These instructions only apply to the latest versions of Nylas Mail.]_ 4 | 5 | Run Nylas Mail and click the menu in the top right to visit **Preferences**. 6 | 7 | ![](./Screen_Shot_2016-10-12_at_3.23.50_PM.png) 8 | 9 | Under the General tab, click "**Use Nylas as the default mail client.**" If you're using Windows 7, you need to click "Yes" in the UAC dialog that appears. Using an app password is more secure than using your regular account password. 8 | 9 | **What are the security benefits of using app passwords?** 10 | 11 | If you use an app password, you don't have to give your regular password to third-party applications. This reduces the risk of your regular password being stolen by malware. Additionally, app passwords are generated with many random characters, which makes it more difficult for malware programs to guess the password. In the unlikely case that an app password is successfully stolen by malware, you can easily revoke access by deleting the app password. Your other passwords will still be safe, so you don't have to go through the trouble of changing your password everywhere. 12 | 13 | **Which providers require an app password?** 14 | 15 | Some providers always require an app password, while others only require an app password if you've enabled two-factor authentication (2FA). As we discover which providers have these requirements, we will list them here, but there may be others that are not currently listed. 16 | 17 | Providers that require an app password with 2FA: 18 | 19 | * Office365 20 | * iCloud 21 | 22 | Providers that always require an app password: 23 | 24 | * Fastmail 25 | 26 | **How do I generate an app password for my provider?** 27 | 28 | Office365 29 | 30 | 1. Nylas Mail Pro gives you unlimited snoozes, scheduled sends, and reminders. 24 | 25 | **Can I use Nylas Mail and Nylas N1 at the same time?** 26 | 27 | Yes.  Through May 2017, you can continue to use Nylas N1 while you test out Nylas Mail to give us feedback.  We think that you will love Nylas Mail and switch to make it your default email client. 28 | 29 | **When is Nylas planning to turn off the Nylas N1 service?** 30 | 31 | We are going to work closely with our customers to pick the best date.  We anticipate that the date is likely to be in late spring of 2017. 32 | 33 | **Do I need to re-authenticate my accounts the first time I use Nylas Mail?** 34 | 35 | Yes.  You will need to re-connect your different email accounts to Nylas Mail. 36 | 37 | **Does Nylas Mail take longer to sync than N1?** 38 | 39 | Since Nylas Mail stores all of your emails on your machine instead of in the cloud, your initial sync time may be longer if you put your computer to sleep or close Nylas Mail.  However, you can send new mail and change your settings while email older than a week is syncing. 40 | 41 | **What version of Nylas Mail is right for me if I am paying for Nylas N1 today? ** 42 | 43 | Nylas Mail Pro.  As stated above, we will be turning off N1 later in 2017\.  Nylas Mail Pro includes unlimited Snooze, Send Later, and Reminders.  If you are a Nylas N1 Pro customer today we will automatically give you access to Nylas Mail Pro. 44 | 45 | **I am an existing Nylas N1 Pro customer.  Will my pricing or billing change?** 46 | 47 | No.  We will continue to honor all customers who purchased Nylas N1 Pro at the discounted price. 48 | 49 | **I am an existing Nylas N1 Pro customer.  How do I cancel my subscription to Nylas?** 50 | 51 | We are sad to see you leave the Nylas community.  If you want to cancel, please go to [https://billing.nylas.com](https://billing.nylas.com) to cancel your subscription and you will receive a prorated refund.  Of course, you can use Nylas Mail for free - just with the limits described above. 52 | 53 | **What features are missing from Nylas Mail that are currently in Nylas N1?** 54 | 55 | The features currently missing from Nylas Mail are: (1) support for on-premise Microsoft Exchange via ActiveSync, (2) Mail Rules, (3) Thread Sharing, (4) Proposed Meeting Times (Scheduler), (5) Mail Merge, (6) Salesforce integration, and (7) our PGP plugin.  We are working to adding many of these features back to Nylas Mail, with a focus on the most requested features.  However, based on our customer feedback and limited usage we are unlikely to add support for on-premise Microsoft Exchange to Nylas Mail. 56 | 57 | 58 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /nylas_pro/220932947-pgp-nylas-mail-plugin-getting-started-guide.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # PGP Nylas Mail Plugin: Getting Started Guide 2 | 3 | The Nylas PGP plugin for Nylas Pro (formerly N1) is a simple tool for end-to-end encryption and decryption of email message bodies. It's designed to make PGP encryption easy and intuitive and is integrated closely with Keybase for public key importing. 4 | 5 | Enabling the PGP Plugin 6 | 7 | The Nylas PGP plugin is disabled by default. To enable it, open Nylas Mail's preferences, select the "Plugins" tab, find the "Encryption" plugin, and flip the toggle. You should now see the small lock icon in your composer window. 8 | 9 | ![](./208258868-Screen_Shot_2016-06-14_at_4.06.11_PM.png) 10 | 11 | Sending an encrypted message 12 | 13 | Get started with the PGP plugin by sending your first encrypted message from Nylas Mail. First, open a new message composer. Add recipients and draft your message. When you're ready to send your message, hit the Encrypt button at the bottom of the composer (it looks like a little lock). 14 | 15 | If you already have a PGP public key stored in Nylas Mail for every message recipient, the button "just works"—it replaces your message with an encrypted block. Otherwise, if you're missing a PGP public key for one or more recipients, the Encrypt button will open a popover so that you can search Keybase for your friends' PGP public keys. Make sure to put your own public key up on Keybase so that your friends can find you easily through Nylas! 16 | 17 | ![](./208284847-search.png) 18 | 19 | If you don't have a Keybase account, no worries—you can get an invite on the Encryption Preferences page. If your friends aren't on Keybase, you can manually import their public keys from that same Preferences page, then come back and finish your message. Once your message body is encrypted and ready to go, send it out to your intended recipients, safe in the knowledge that only they can read it. 20 | 21 | ![](./208213688-encrypted.png) 22 | 23 | Decrypting received messages 24 | 25 | Before you can decrypt any messages encrypted with your public key, you must first import the associated private key into Nylas Mail. The first step is getting your private key. If you saved your private key to Keybase, you can export it by clicking the "edit" button under your username, next to the key symbol and the associated key fingerprint. If it's stored in GPG, you can export it to file with `gpg --export-secret-key -a "User Name" > private.key`. Regardless of where your key came from, once you have it, you can head to the Encryption Preferences page and use one of the "Add a PGP Key" buttons to import it into N1. 26 | 27 | When you receive a message with an encrypted block, Nylas Mail should automatically detect that the message is encrypted and offer you a Decrypt button above the body in the message view. Click the Decrypt button and enter the password for your PGP private key. If the password is correct and the message was encrypted properly using your matching public key, it should be decrypted just like that! Your private key password is automatically cached for 30 minutes after each use. After that, you'll have to enter it again. 28 | 29 | ![](./208284807-decrypting.png) 30 | 31 | If, instead of an encrypted block, your message has an `encrypted.asc` attachment, execute the exact same process, but with the Decrypt Attachment button instead of the Decrypt button. You can save the decrypted contents of `encrypted.asc` wherever you like, to be opened later. 32 | 33 | Key management 34 | 35 | PGP keys in Nylas Mail's Keybase plugin are managed on the Encryption tab of Nylas Mail's Preferences page. 36 | 37 | ![](./208213628-preferences.png) 38 | 39 | From this page, you can import PGP keys from file, paste them in manually, search Keybase by name and username, associate new emails with existing keys, export keys, delete keys, and even generate new PGP keypairs using Keybase's kbpgp library. 40 | 41 | FAQ  42 | 43 | **Can I sign messages with Nylas Mail?** 44 | 45 | Not yet, but we're working on it! Unfortunately, clearsigning messages is much more difficult than encrypting them, since the message cleartext must make it to the other provider unaltered. Some mail providers (e.g. Gmail) automatically edit HTML-formatted emails (like the ones Nylas sends) to remove certain HTML tags or make links "data-safe." Preventing this would require either implementing PGP/MIME on the Nylas Mail backend or adding a plaintext message composer to Nylas Mail, neither of which is trivial. 46 | 47 | **Can I upload and download encrypted attachments with Nylas Mail?** 48 | 49 | This feature, too, is in the works. Downloading encrypted.asc files like those sent by Enigmail is currently supported, but attachments sent from Nylas are currently not encrypted, even if the message body is. 50 | 51 | **Where are the PGP keys used by Nylas Mail stored?** 52 | 53 | Keys imported into N1 via the Encryption Preferences page or the Encrypt button's Import popover are stored in `$HOME/.nylas/keys`, and nowhere else. The contents of your PGP keys never leave your machine. 54 | 55 | **Can I automatically import keys from non-Keybase keyservers, like the MIT PGP keyserver or the Ubuntu keyserver?** 56 | 57 | Not yet. We're working on a feature that will let you import such keys from the Encryption Preferences page. Importing keys from the message composer will likely remain Keybase-exclusive for the forseeable future. 58 | 59 | **How does the Keybase plugin interact with the Nylas Cloud?** 60 | 61 | By and large, the unencrypted contents of your messages never touch Nylas servers. There are only two cases in which the plaintext contents of an encrypted message could ever be synced to the Nylas Cloud. To avoid them, we recommend composing all encrypted messages entirely within Nylas and not encrypting messages after you have already scheduled them to send later. 62 | 63 | 1. If you compose a draft, hit Send Later, and subsequently go back to encrypt the draft, it's too late—the plaintext message has already been stored on Nylas' servers. Hitting Send Later sends a copy of your message to the Nylas Cloud so that it can be... well... sent later. Unfortunately, we do not yet auto-detect drafts becoming encrypted after being initially sent to our servers for Send Later. 64 | 65 | 2. If you start composing a message in Gmail's web interface, then the message draft syncs to Nylas Mail and you continue to edit it there, the draft is (for consistency) synced back to Gmail through the Nylas Cloud while you edit in in Nylas Mail. You should assume that any message initially composed in Gmail web before being encrypted in Nylas Mail has already been sent in plaintext, by both Gmail and Nylas Mail, to the Nylas Cloud. 66 | 67 | Email [support@nylas.com](mailto:support@nylas.com) with any further questions about Nylas Mail's Keybase plugin! 68 | 69 | 70 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /SUMMARY.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # Summary 2 | 3 | ##
