But there 4 | are a few important points to follow. 5 | 6 | ## Assemble the module: 7 | 8 | 1. Start by preparing the 2 12-pin headers: the pins need to be pushed downward so that 9 | no metal whatsoever protrudes through the top of the board when fitted. If you run your 10 | finger along the solder pads, you shouldn't be able to feel the pins. It's OK for the 11 | pins to be slightly inset from the edge, but not too much. I ordered a 1.6mm thickness 12 | PC board, so this made it easier to adjust (thinner would be more difficult). 13 | 14 | 2. Once all the pins are adjusted to the right length, the easiest way to keep the board 15 | stable while mounting is to insert the headers into a solderless breadboard, and place 16 | the board on top. Once positioned, solder the pins into the holes until the solder 17 | level is flush with the board. As with any solder joint, flux is your friend. I use a 18 | flux pen for connections on boards like these. 19 | 20 | 3. Next, solder the pull-up resistors and/or jumpers or switching wires. I placed two 21 | 47K ohm 0805 surface-mount resistors on the board to ensure that the two floating address 22 | lines are set to something. The jumpers are there in case you would like to occasionally 23 | switch which bank is active (the FeRAM chip contains 4 times as much memory as the SRAM 24 | which it replaces). For my uses, I only wanted to use a single bank. I have set up the 25 | board so that you can switch banks by jumper, but you could adapt it to some sort of 26 | switch if you prefer. Just remember that it's the two middle holes which need to be 27 | switched between logical high or low values. 28 | 29 | 4. Next, the surface-mount FeRAM chip is to be mounted. BE CAREFUL TO ORIENT PIN 1 PROPERLY !! 30 | On a chip like this, I would align it and hold it in place while soldering one corner pin. 31 | Then, ensuring continuing good alignment, my other hand can be freed up for more conistent 32 | solder joints. Careful not to overheat the chip... but I expect that you already knew that. 33 | 34 | 5. Clean the board with 99% isopropyl, and it's ready to mount. 35 | 36 | ![Finished Module](images/module-done.jpg) 37 | 38 | 39 | ## Desolder the chip from the Tennokoe 2: 40 | 41 | 1. If you have any game saves in the unit, you will want to back them up somehow. A 42 | Tennokoe Bank card is probably your best option. Next, remove the batteries from the 43 | unit, and remove the screws holding the back of the unit on. Once the system is open, 44 | gently move the case to the side; the battery leads are still connected. After this 45 | operation, you won't need the battery anymore, but I still like to leave them connected. 46 | 47 | 2. Locate the SRAM chip, and identify pin 1 (there is a notch on one end identifying it). 48 | Turn over the board, and use a solder wick the rmove the solder from around each of the 49 | leads. Since this is a one-layer PC board, once you wick the solder away from the pad all 50 | the way around each lead, they move somewhat freely. In both case where I have done this, 51 | this is all that is needed to be able to extract the chip as it moves freely. Once fully removed, you can insert the assembled module. PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE 63 | ORIENTATION OF PIN 1 !! You will want to cut the header pins closer to the board, as 64 | they extend quite a distance beyond the board... but be careful to leave a small amount 65 | of pin protruding, in order to get a good solder joint (being a 1-layer board, the solder 66 | won't make a good bond through the hole, as it has on the module you made earlier). 67 | 68 | 2. Check orientation one more time ! Then solder it in. 69 | 70 | 3. You might want to test it out before reassembling the case. If you have a Tennokoe Bank 71 | card, this should be a good option - restore something to its memory, turn the power off, 72 | then try it out again after a few minutes, to make sure that the memory is non-volatile. 73 | 74 | 4. When reassembling, seat the PC board properly in the back plastic shell; this is a bit 75 | tricky, as it doesn't seem to have an optimal position at first. /FRAM-SOIC-assembly.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | # FRAM-SOIC converter board installation - TurboDuo 2 | 3 | I only have a Duo to demonstrate on, but I'm reasonably certain that the board will fit 4 | other models like the Duo-R and Duo-RX. 5 | 6 | The SOIC adapter board is simple enough to install if you are confident in your soldering 7 | skills. But if you are just starting out, you may want to get it installed by somebody 8 | else. 9 | 10 | ## Preparation: 11 | 12 | 1. Backup - If you have any game saves in the unit, you will want to back them up somehow. 13 | A Tennokoe Bank card is probably your best option. 14 | 15 | 2. Open the Machine - Next, turn the unit over, and remove the screws holding the back on. 16 | After removing the screws, turn the Duo back over so it sits as it normally would. Next, 17 | open the CD lid, and gently wiggle the top plastic shell off of the bottom shell... you may 18 | see that some plastic in the CD drive area; this may be helpful to get some leverage for 19 | gently opening the top (be careful not to touch the lens !) Also, if your system has had 20 | modifications done on it before, there may be wires leading to some mounting point in the 21 | top shell; be very careful not to put any stress on these as you lift the top shell. 22 | 23 | 3. Locate the Chip - On the Duo, you will find the SRAM chip in the middle on the 24 | left-right axis, and slightly toward the back on the front-back axis. It's close to the 25 | voltage regulators with their heatsinks. 26 | 27 | Take note of where pin 1 of the chip is. 28 | 29 | ![SRAM on Duo](images/duo_before.jpg) 30 | 31 | ## Desolder the old chip: 32 | 33 | This is the most difficult part of the operation, as the chip seems to be held 34 | tightly against the board by some sort of lacquer or glue - and this is why I don't 35 | recommend this upgrade to novices. 36 | 37 | 1. If you have a hot air station, you may wish to use it to desolder the pins - and weaken 38 | the lacquer/glue bond. 39 | 40 | 2. If you don't have a hot air station, you should first remove as much solder as possible 41 | from the leads, using a solder wick. As you apply heat on a second pass, you will need to 42 | lift the pins from the pads as well. Removing the actual chip from the board may require 43 | isopropyl alcohol, but as you try to lift it, be careful not to damage the board or any of 44 | the copper traces ! Once it's off, go back around the pads with the solder wick to clean 45 | them up, and use the alcohol once more to clean the area. 46 | 47 | ![SRAM removed](images/duo_desolder.jpg) 48 | 49 | ## Apply the Flex PC Board: 50 | 51 | 1. You'll notice that the Duo PC board has some exposed via's; although the flex PC board 52 | doesn't expose any traces, I felt it was better to lay down a strip of Kapton tape, just 53 | in case. 54 | 55 | 2. Position the flex PC board as shown in the photo below, with the "U" of the board facing 56 | pin 1's end. As the board is a little tricky to position, and shifts easily, I used another 57 | pice of Kapton tape to position it and hold it in position as I soldered. You have a couple of choices before mounting the FRAM chip - you should decide whether 68 | you are just planning to have a single backup RAM storage area, or whether you would like 69 | as many as four (since the chip's capacity is that large). In either case, you should solder 70 | the two 47K pull-up resistors on the board. We'll get to the choice in a moment. 71 | 72 | 2. Position the FeRAM carefully on the board, and be careful to ensure the correct 73 | orientation for pin 1. Solder in place (I'm assuming that you've soldered a similar SMD 74 | device in the past) 75 | 76 | 3. Now for the choice. In my case, I was only intersted in replacing the original, single 77 | BRAM area, so I was done at this point. However, if you want more, you will need to create 78 | some sort of switching setup. On the left edge of the board, you will notice a series of 79 | four solder tabs: the outer tabs are for ground and Vcc (logical states '0' and '1'); the 80 | middle two pads are for selecting the bank. The pull-up resistors bring these pins to the 81 | '1'/'1' state automatically, so really you only need to ground either or both of these 82 | address lines in order to select another bank. I'll leave the exact type of switch to you. 83 | 84 | 4. So that you don't leave those tabs (with both ground and power) exposed, you may want to 85 | use another piece of Kapton to cover that flap and anchor it to the board. 86 | 87 | 5. Before reassembling the case completly, you might want to test it out. It used a 2KB static RAM. This wasn't in the cartridges 5 | themselves; initially, it was sold as pat of an add-on to the system: The Tennokoe 2, 6 | "Voice from Heaven". In later systems like the Duo series, it would be integrated into 7 | the system unit, yet still be limited to 2KB static RAM. 8 | 9 | You're probably thinking, "Static RAM is volatile - it loses its contents when the power 10 | is shut off", and you'd be right. There really weren't any non-volatiole options at the 11 | time. Instead, they used batteries or large capacitors to apply continuous power to the 12 | memory, so that it would not lose its contents. In the case of the Tennokoe 2, 2 "AA" 13 | cells were used; in the case of the Duo, a large capacitor was used. 14 | 15 | I have lost a few game saves on my Duo because I failed to turn the system on for a period 16 | of time long enough to lose its contents... probably about 1 to 2 weeks. 17 | 18 | Because of this, I was inspired to replace the SRAM with modern FeRAM to make it 19 | non-volatile. But the Duo is a tighter-packed PC board with surface-mount chips, so I felt it 20 | was easier to first test the idea on the Tennokoe 2, which uses a DIP SRAM chip. 21 | 22 | I have followed up with a design for a flex PCB to use with surface-mount chips in order to 23 | be suitable for my Duo, and it also works well. 24 | 25 | I chose to use the Cypress FM16W08 chip, which can handle 5V, has timing which is 26 | equal to or better than the SRAM it is replacing, and has a similar pinout.
