5 | This is the repository for **The Digital Exeter-Book Hand** ([exeterbookhand.com](https://www.exeterbookhand.com)), an independent project that has been created to encourage the study and appreciation of the scribal hand of the Exeter MS 3501, commonly known as the Exeter Book.

7 | The Exeter Book is one of the four major surviving miscellanies of Old English literature. It acquired its name because it has been in the care of the Exeter Cathedral since it was donated to the library there sometime before 1072. Written around AD 970, the Exeter Book was described in Bishop Leofric’s donation list as a _mycel Englisc boc be gehwilcum þingum on leoð-wisan geworht_ (‘a large English book about all sorts of things composed in verse’), with texts ranging from religious narrative to didactic poems and riddles. The script is English Square minuscule, which emerged from the earlier pointed minuscule developed in the British Isles. Elegantly crafted by the Exeter Book scribe, this Square minuscule hand was deemed by Sir E. M. Thompson to be a standard example of what 10th-century scribes aspired to emulate.
