M-mount lenses are also favorite among digital mirrorless camera using adapters. 4 | 5 | ⚠️ This documents and database is work in progress, please see _contributing_ section below. 6 | 7 | --- 8 | Researching M-mount lenses is sometimes not as easy as it should be for a couple of reasons: 9 | 10 | 1. There is a lot of old and not well-documented lenses that work perfectly well on any M-mount camera today. 11 | 2. M-mount is very popular and easy to adopt by many companies, these several vendors are making fully compatible lenses. 12 | 3. Even Leica is not great at having maintained a public database of all lenses they make. 13 | 14 | There is a couple of requirements for the lens to make this list: 15 | 1. It has to work on both, digital and film, cameras. 16 | 2. It has to be bayonet M-mount lens (or very popular conversion. e.g., Canon "Dream Lens"). 17 | 3. It has to be rangefinder coupled. 18 | 19 | --- 20 | 21 | # Footnotes 22 | 23 | 1. Leitz 21mm f/4 Super-Angulon works on digital M as it doesn't damage the camera in any way. However, rear lens is too close to the sensor resulting false colors around the perimeter of photo. This is not an issue when using film. 24 | 2. This lens has integrated "googles" for the rangefinder. 25 | 3. FL (or FLE) is not part of the official name. FL/FLE stands for *floating elements*. 26 | 4. Not originally M-Mount lens, but very popular conversion. Relatively easy to buy in M-mount online. 27 | 5. Specialty lens. Unconventional bokeh. 28 | 6. Can be used on digital, but without metering. 29 | 7. Technically, not a different lenses. SC and MC stand for single and multi coated versions. Single coated version is supposed to have vintage rendering. 30 | 31 | --- 32 | 33 | ## Leica Lens Nomenclature 34 | 35 | Unlike Zeiss lenses, Leica lens names usually indicate their maximum aperture rather than design. Below is a rough explanation on what those strange words mean. 36 | 37 | * **Summicron** — F/2.0 lenses. 38 | * **Summilux** — F/1.4 lenses. 39 | * **Summarit** — F/2.4 or F/2.5 lenses (see note below). 40 | * **Noctilux** — Anything faster than F/1.4. Most famous being F/0.95 50mm lens. 41 | * **Elmarit** — F/2.8 lenses. 42 | * **Elmar** and **Super-Elmar** — Between F/3.4 to F/4.0. 43 | * **Hector** — F/4.5 and above. 44 | * **Thambar** — Vintage design, soft-focusing lenses. 45 | 46 | If you are looking into lenses made before 1960, those names above might make no sense since they were used differently. For example, Summarit lenses were F/1.5 instead of F/2.4–2.5. 47 | 48 | Note that, on other mounts and camera systems those names are sometimes used more generously. Leica Q with 28mm F/1.7 Summilux (not F/1.4) comes to mind. 49 | 50 | All above are trademarks of Leica Camera AG. 51 | 52 | 53 | #### Note on modern Summarit lenses 54 | 55 | Modern Summarit lenses were primarily made for digital cameras in the mid-2000s. While they are optically excellent and work on film, most have noticeable barrel distortion which is easy to fix in a digital workflow. 56 | 57 | ### 6-bit Code 58 | 59 | Codes are given **left to right** when holding lens bayonet and rear element facing you and code positioned at the top (12 o'clock) of the lens. 60 | 61 | * 1 = Black dot 62 | * 0 = White dot 63 | 64 | ### Leica Lens Markings 65 | 66 | * **ASPH.** — The lens has at least one aspherical element. 67 | * **APO** — The lens is chromatically corrected. 68 | * **Tri-** — The lens has three focal lengths, quasi-zoom lens. 69 | 70 | ## Zeiss Name Nomenclature 71 | 72 | Zeiss lens names are [historical design names](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_photographic_lens_design). 73 | 74 | # Contributing 75 | 76 | Contribution to this list are very welcome and are the pretty much sole purpose of this database/list. There is many websites that have similar lists of Leica or M-mount lenses, but they all suffer the same issue—they get outdated. The goal of this repo is to keep most accurate and up-to-date list of this kind. 77 | 78 | Both, lens (row) and datatype (column), contributions are welcome! 79 | 80 | 81 | # License 82 | 83 | This list was collected from public sources from all over the internet and offline material. Nothing in this list is anything but advertised specifications from lens manufacturers. While attribution and referencing this list appreciated, it is not required. 84 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /List of M-Mount Lenses.csv: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | ƒ (mm),Max 1/F,Name,Years,Filter (mm),Min Focus (cm),6-bit Code,Made in 2 | 10,5.6,Voigtländer 10mm f/5.6 Aspherical,2016–,—,50,,Japan 3 | 12,5.6,Voigtländer 12mm f/5.6 III Aspherical,2016–,—,70,,Japan 4 | 12,5.6,Voigtländer 12mm f/5.6 II Aspherical,2000–2016,67,70,,Japan 5 | 15,2.8,"Zeiss Distagon T*2,8/15 ZM",2012–,72,30,,Germany 6 | 15,4.5,Voigtländer 15mm f/4.5 M III Aspherical,2015–,58,30,,Japan 7 | 15,4.5,Voigtländer 15mm f/4.5 M II Aspherical,2009–2015,52,50,,Japan 8 | 16,4.0,Leica Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH.,2006–,67,50,010000,Germany 9 | 18,3.8,Leica Super-Elmar-M 18mm f/3.8 ASPH.,2006–,77,70,110100,Germany 10 | 18,4.0,Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/4 ZM,2007–,58,50,,Japan 11 | 21,1.4,Leica Summilux-M 21mm f/1.4 ASPH.,2008–,—,70,101111,Germany 12 | 21,1.8,Voigtländer 21mm f/1.8 Ultron Aspherical,2012–,58,50,,Japan 13 | 21,2.8,Leica Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH.,1997–2011,55,70,000001,Germany 14 | 21,2.8,Leica Leitz Elmarit 21mm f/2.8,1985–1997,60,70,,Canada 15 | 21,2.8,Leica Leitz Elmarit 21mm f/2.8,1980–1985,49,38,,Canada 16 | 21,2.8,"Zeiss Biogon T*2,8/21 ZM",2004–,46,50,,Japan 17 | 21,3.4,Leica Super-Elmar-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH.,2011–,46,70,110011,Germany 18 | 21,4.0,Leica Leitz 21mm f/4 Super-Angulon¹,1958–1963,39,40,,Germany 19 | 21,4.0,Voigtländer 21mm f/4,2007–,39,50,,Japan 20 | 21,4.5,Zeiss ZM 21mm f/4.5,2004–,46,50,,Japan 21 | 24,1.4,Leica Summilux-M 24mm f/1.4 ASPH.,2008–,72*,70,110000,Germany 22 | 24,2.8,Leica Elmarit-M 24mm f/2.8 ASPH.,1996–,55,70,011001,Germany 23 | 24,3.8,Leica Elmar-M 24mm f/3.8 ASPH.,2008–,46,70,110010, 24 | 25,2.8,"Zeiss Biogon T*2,8/25 ZM",2004–,46,50,, 25 | 28,1.9,Voigtländer 28mm F/1.9,2000–2008,46,70,,Japan 26 | 28,2.0,Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH.,2000–,46,70,011010,Germany 27 | 28,2.0,Voigtländer 28mm F/2,2008–,46,70,,Japan 28 | 28,2.8,Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH.,2006–,39,70,011100,Germany 29 | 28,2.8,Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 (Ver. 4),1992–2006,46,70,011011, 30 | 28,2.8,Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 (Ver. 3),1979–1993,39,70,000011,Canada 31 | 28,2.8,Leica Elmarit 28mm f/2.8 (Ver. 2),1972–1979,48,70,,Canada 32 | 28,2.8,Leica Elmarit 28mm f/2.8 (Ver. 1)⁶,1965–1972,48,70,,Canada 33 | 28,2.8,"Zeiss Biogon T*2,8/28 ZM",2004–,46,50,,Japan 34 | 28,2.8,Konica M 28mm F/2.8,1999–2003,46,70,,Japan 35 | 28,2.8,Minolta M-Rokkor 28mm F/2.8,,40.5,80,,Japan 36 | 28,4.0,Leica Tri-Elmar-M 28-35-50mm f/4 ASPH.,1998–,55,100,101010, 37 | 28,5.6,Leica Leitz 28mm Summaron f/5.6,2017–,34,100,,Germany 38 | 35,1.2,Voigtländer 35mm F/1.2 II Aspherical,2011–,52,70,,Japan 39 | 35,1.4,Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH.
