Did you know that they have nothing to do with actual hacking -- it's nothing illegal! It's an opportunity for you to build your portfolio and meet some new people. 5 | 6 | According to Wikipedia, a [hackathon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackathon): 7 | 8 | * Also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest, is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development and hardware development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects. 9 | 10 | Whew! That's a lot of fancy words...our definition is slightly different: 11 | 12 | * A day of fun, collaboration where women of all code abilities (haven't written a line of code? Come anyway!) work on code projects with the guidance of smart, empathetic mentors who were all once beginners themselves. Awesome prizes are given for creativity, team collaboration and presentation! 13 | 14 | If you ever have any questions or comments about hackathons feel free to reach out to us on [Twitter](http://twitter.com/wwcodeatx). 15 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /job_hunting_resources.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | Job Hunting Resources 2 | ========================= 3 | ## Job Boards 4 | * [Austin Digital Jobs](https://www.facebook.com/groups/austindigitaljobs/) 5 | * [Capital Factory Jobs](https://www.facebook.com/groups/capitalfactoryjobs/) 6 | * [Hirily](http://hirily.com/) 7 | 8 | ## Job Coaching 9 | * New Iron (Free Career Coaching with Janelle Klein) [linkedin.com/in/janelleklein](https://www.linkedin.com/in/janelleklein) 10 | 11 | ## Meetups: 12 | * [ATXSass](http://www.meetup.com/ATXSass) 13 | * [Austin .NET Meetup](http://www.meetup.com/Austin-Dot-Net) 14 | * [Austin All-Girl Hack Night](http://www.meetup.com/Austin-All-Girl-Hack-Night) 15 | * [Austin Droids: Android Developers](http://www.meetup.com/Austin-Android) 16 | * [Austin JavaScript](http://www.meetup.com/javascript-austin) 17 | * [Austin PHP Meetup](http://www.meetup.com/austinphp) 18 | * [Austin Python Meetup](http://www.meetup.com/austinpython) 19 | * [Austin RailsBridge Studygroup](http://www.meetup.com/Austin-RailsBridge-Studygroup) 20 | * [Feminist Hack ATX](http://www.meetup.com/Feminist-Hack-ATX) 21 | * [GirlDevelopIt(GDI) Austin](http://www.meetup.com/Girl-Develop-It-Austin) 22 | * [PyLadies ATX](http://www.meetup.com/PyLadies-ATX) 23 | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /awesome_meetups.md: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | AWESOME AUSTIN MEETUPS 2 | ========================= 3 | 4 | ### Austin RailsBridge - The best way to do that is with a pull request. Don't know how to do that? Don't worry, this document will walk you through the process. 5 | 6 | ### Forking the repository 7 | Start by **forking** this repository. From the official [GitHub Guide](https://guides.github.com/activities/forking/) on **forking**: 8 | 9 | > Creating a “fork” is producing a personal copy of someone else’s project. Forks act as a sort of bridge between the original repository and your personal copy. You can submit Pull Requests to help make other people’s projects better by offering your changes up to the original project. Forking is at the core of social coding at GitHub. 10 | 11 | To fork the repository: 12 | * Click on the **fork** button. 13 | 14 | ![Image of the location of the fork button](./img/fork_button.png) 15 | 16 | * Next choose the account where you want the **fork** to be cloned.
17 | (You may have less choices then I do.). 18 | 19 | ![Image of account choice dialog for fork](./img/fork_account_dialog.png) 20 | 21 | * This takes you to a wonderful hold screen while the forking takes place. 22 | 23 | ![Image of GitHub fork page](./img/forking_image.png) 24 | 25 | * And now you have a copy in your repository. 26 | 27 | ![Image of fork in your own repository](./img/fork_in_repo.png) 28 | 29 | ### Prepare for work 30 | Now you have a copy of the original organizational repository. **Clone** it to your computer as you normally would. 31 | 32 | Before going any further though, you need to make sure your **fork** can get updates from the original repository. This requires adding an **upstream to the fork's remote** configuration. GitHub has an easy to use tutorial on how to do this [here](https://help.github.com/en/articles/configuring-a-remote-for-a-fork). Now you can get updates from the original repository as needed. 33 | 34 | ### Create a features Branch 35 | It is always a good idea to create a branch off the **master branch** to do your work. A good practice is to name this **branch** after the feature or issue you are working on. Do your work on this **branch** - making commits as you go along. 36 | 37 | ### Create a Pull Request 38 | Once you are satisfied with your work and you want to integrate it into the original project, you can create a **pull request** against the original repository. The purpose of the **pull request** is to make your code available to the developers working on the original repository and offer for it to be **merged** with the original code. 39 | 40 | * GitHub very handily offers to do this for you when you push your updated code to your feature branch. 41 | 42 | ![Image of pull request dialog](./img/pull_request_dialog.png) 43 | 44 | * Clicking the button opens a form on the original repository page. You can add an optional message about what is in your **pull request**. Once you are done, click the "create pull request" button. 45 | 46 | ![Image of pull request form](./img/pull_request_form.png) 47 | 48 | * On this particular repository, an admin needs to review the **pull request** and **merge** it for you. 49 | ![Image of merge dialog](./img/pull_request_merge_page.png) 50 | 51 | * And you are **merged**. **Pull request** success! 52 | ![Image of final merge dialog](./img/final_merge.png) 53 | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
